From staff reports

Wayne County commissioners will hold a public hearing Tuesday morning on a proposal to increase the surcharge for 911 emergency telephone service.

The commissioners are pondering an increase of $1 per month, from 85 cents to $1.85 cents. The surcharge is attached to residents' telephone bills. The additional money is needed to keep the county's emergency response system up-to-date, officials say.

Later in the meeting, the commissioners will consider a proposal to pay $335,699 for construction of a 300-foot tower in Goldsboro to improve communications for the 911 emergency system.

The commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in their board room on the fourth floor of the courthouse annex. Public hearings are first on their agenda. They will meet for a briefing session at 8 a.m.

Two other public hearings are scheduled before the one on the 911 charge increase. The commissioners will hear comments on the closeout of revitalization grants for the Parkstown neighborhood and Myrtle Place Apartments and on the proposed rezoning of property in two places -- one to permit a house on property on Genoa Road that is within the Accident Potential Zone around Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and the other to change the zoning of five tracts of land on U.S. 117 Alternate from residential-agricultural to heavy industry.

At their briefing before their regular meeting, the commissioners appointments committee will consider appointments to 16 boards and commissons, which are listed below. The committee will make a report to the full board during the meeting. The boards on the list include:
