Search dog
leads officers
to suspect
A Wayne County sheriff's search dog led deputies to a man who is suspected of stealing a car.
Sheriff's Deputy Eric Robinson was notified of the car theft on Wednesday. A day later he found the vehicle and asked for assistance from Cpl. Joe Smith and his search dog, Maggie. Maggie followed tracks to a nearby home, where David Earl McCullen, 41, was charged with felony vehicle larceny.
McCullen, of Herring Road, Dudley, was charged with larceny and felony possession of a stolen car. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.
The car, valued at $2,000, was returned to the owner, who had left the key inside.
Store robbed
Two men, one armed with a rifle, robbed a convenience store of cash and cigarettes before dawn today, according to a Goldsboro police report.
A clerk at The Pantry at 515 E. New Hope Road told police that two black men entered the store at about 2 a.m. and demanded money. The gunman stood in front of the register while the other suspect filled a white bag with less than $100 and 20 packs of Newport cigarettes, the report said. Both suspects then fled east on New Hope Road.
The gunman was described as 5-feet-8 and 160 pounds with a medium build and black hair. He wore a white hat, gray jacket, white shirt and pants. The other robber was not described.
Scam reported
Goldsboro police said a woman told investigators she paid $145 to someone who claimed that she could make her son into a child model. Kristen S. Tingen of Goldsboro told officers that after her check cleared, she tried to contact the person but the phone number had been disconnected.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $28,000 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both drivers were injured and both vehicles were demolished in a wreck at 5:30 p.m. Thursday on South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 117 bypass, near West Grantham Street, Goldsboro police said. Brandon Mark Pressley, 19, of Winston Drive and Kenneth Ray Strickland, 45, of Blackjack Church Road were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Pressley was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. The vehicles were valued at $5,000.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a three-vehicle collision at 11:11 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 70 West near Nevel Street, police said. Suzette Jean Best, 45, of Foxcroft Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. A second motorist, Monroe Cummings Sr., 57, of Shelton Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The third driver was identified as Charles Wayne Sugg Jr., 39, of Middleton Road. Damages were set at $1,000.
*A pickup truck was destroyed in a wreck at 3:45 a.m. today on West Grantham Street near Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, police said. The truck ran off the right side through a grassy median, struck a ditch and rolled over, the report said. The driver fled. Police said the truck, valued at $9,000, was registered to D.S. Simmons Inc. of 112 W. Chestnut St.
*Damages were estimated at $13,000 in a crash of a car and a farm tractor at 11:30 a.m. July 14 on Nahunta Road near Fields Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Christopher Ulyssess Oates, 29, of Greenville, was charged with improper passing. The report said Oates tried to pass a slow-moving tractor and struck the sprayer arm, causing the tractor to roll over. The operator of the tractor, Florencio Cisneros, 26, of Holland Hill Drive, was not injured.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A thief chopped a piece of wood that had been put in a window to stop intruders, then entered three buildings at Mar Mac Community Ballpark on Old Grantham Road and stole $452 worth of candy, sheriff's deputies said. The thief also damaged a drink machine. Damages were estimated at $320.
*A hungry thief forced open a door to a home in the 200 block of Wood Drive, cooked food and then stole a video game, a pair of boots and a shirt, deputies said. The intruder left a shirt and other property, the report said. The resident, Torrey Tyson Jones, estimated the value of the stolen property at $340 and damage at $100.
*A green Yamaha four-wheeler was stolen before dawn today from the 1600 block of Lancaster Road, deputies said. The resident, Daryl Glenn Langston, put a $5,000 value on the vehicle.
Man stabbed
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A man walking Thursday night in the 2300 block of Courtyard Circle was stabbed in his right thigh by two black men, police said. Laportae Williams, 21, who did not disclose a home address, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The assailants were described only as having worn red bandannas.
*A Goldsboro woman reported that a man threw a brick through the front door and side windows Thursday night at her home in the 1000 block of South Taylor Street, police said. The man did not get inside and fled before police arrived. The suspect was described as black, about 35 years old, 5-feet-6 and 145 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. He wore a black and white hat, a white and blue shirt, black pants and black shoes. Damages were put at $725.
Forgery charged
A 31-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with forgery and uttering. Kevin Michael Newhart of Central Heights Road was accused of stealing a check from a Goldsboro man who had given him a ride to a store in Grantham. The check was cashed for $125 at the store, investigators said. Newhart was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
