Goldsboro High School will begin band camp for the 2005-06 marching band season at 9 a.m. Aug. 1 under the direction of new band director, Kirby Hamilton, Jr.

Interested students should report to the band room with proof of having a physical, $80 to join-up and a parent. Students are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothes.

Hamilton, who is a 1974 GHS graduate, expects 60 to 70 students to show up on Monday. At the beginning of camp, students will learn the rules and regulations of being in the band and what will be expected of them. They will also find out what they can expect from their new director. Following that, students will learn techniques, music and get in shape to march.

"We're going to be working hard," Hamilton said. Hamilton previously taught band in California. This will be his first time directing a band in North Carolina.

Hamilton encouraged students and parents to pass the word to anyone interested in joining this year's effort, either as a participant or supporter.

"I'm expecting a very exciting and entertaining year," he said. "I would like to thank everybody for their support and promise of support. And let's do this."

Band camp will run through Aug. 8. For more information, parents and students should call the high school at 731-5930.

Also, students interested in being in the band at either Dillard Middle School or Goldsboro Middle School should contact their respective schools for more information. Janet Barnes will be working with band students at both schools.
