Suspect in Fremont shooting released under $30,000 bond

FREMONT -- A Fremont man charged with the shooting of a Wilson man on Saturday has posted a $30,000 secured bond and has been released from the Wayne County Jail, officials said.
Johnathan Anthony Uzzell, 26, of Wooten Street was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury and discharge of weapon into occupied property.
Wooten's hometown had been listed as Pikeville in the initial report from Fremont police.
The victim, Frederick Montrel Williams, 23, remained in intensive care at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Fremont Police Chief Ben Reid said Tuesday night. A hospital spokeswoman would not confirm that Williams was a patient.
Williams was alone in a 1993 Lexus at about 1 p.m. Saturday, when he was shot on the west side of the intersection of West South and Pine streets. Reid said Williams was going south.
Reid speculated that the two men knew each other but did not know for sure.
The chief thanked William Young, a part-time Fremont police officer and full-time Wayne County sheriff's deputy, for his quick response to the incident.
"We've been working the case hard," said Reid, who was assisted by Sgt. Wayne Schwark.
Reid would not say what led the officers to Uzzell, who turned himself in to officers and was arrested about 12 hours after the shooting.
Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris also assisted in the crime-scene investigation.
