Wayne schools honored

The Wayne County Public School system has been named school district of the year for eastern North Carolina for its efforts in international education and cultural exchange.
The Visiting International Faculty Program announced the award. The school system has participated in the program as a way to recruit teachers. Educators are assigned classes at the elementary, middle and high school levels, typically in the areas of Spanish, English-as-a-second-language and math and science.
Hope Meyerhoeffer, coordinator of the VIF teachers for Wayne, said the school system employed 18 international teachers during 2004-05, with 30 hired for the coming school year. The teachers have come from such countries as Africa, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Canada, Australia, India, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. They typically teach in Wayne for three years.
