woman assaulted
A woman was assaulted in weekend crimes that were reported by Goldsboro police.
Cheree Maria Booker, 24, of Goldsboro told officers that she was visiting before dawn Sunday in an apartment in the 900 block of Marvin Street. A man then barged into the apartment at about 12:05 a.m., punched Ms. Booker, struck her with a broom handle and damaged her cell phone, the report said.
Ms. Booker was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, a spokeswoman said. The phone was valued at $158.
The assailant was described as being about 19 years old, black, 6-feet and 175 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes.
Drug charges
A 29-year-old man was arrested before dawn today by Goldsboro police and charged with two felony drug trafficking violations and a felony weapon offense.
Steven Patrick Pate of U.S. 13 South was charged with trafficking in cocaine by possession, trafficking in cocaine by transport and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Pate was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 secured bond.
Five hurt in wrecks
Five people were injured and damage was estimated at $15,300 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 10:18 a.m. Sunday at West Grantham Street and an exit ramp from Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70-117 bypass, Goldsboro police said, Linda Smith Moses, 52, of Carraway Creek Drive, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, Rosalina M. Grimes, 27, of Fayetteville, was going east, and swerved to the left into the median to avoid a pickup truck leaving the exit ramp. The other driver, Benjamin Raymond Warrick, 69, of Clinton, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damage was estimated at $800 to Ms. Grimes' auto.
*Four people were injured and damage was estimated at $6,500 in a three-vehicle crash at 4:27 p.m. Saturday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Royall Avenue, police said. One driver, Shirley Green, 69, of Poplar Street, and a second driver, Barney Crews Jr., 73, of South Allegheny Place, Dudley, and two passengers, Jaime Crews, 43, and Belinda Crews, 14, both of Arrington Bridge Road, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Green was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The third motorist was identified as Patrick Robert Guerard, 19, of Morgan Trace Lane.
*Damage was estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 5 p.m. July 3 at U.S. 70 and Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Janet L. Brooks, 46, of Palo Alto, Calif., was going east, the report said, and the car collided with a southbound sport utility vehicle. The other motorist, Eufracio Campos, 26, of Magnolia, was charged with a safe-movement violation at a stop sign.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A thief inflicted about $2,540 worth of damage to a truck Saturday in the Spring Creek High School parking lot, deputies said. The owner, Jack Braddock Basden of Dudley, said only a flashlight, valued at $15, was stolen.
*Two shotguns, a scope and a video game were stolen between Friday and Saturday after a window was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Earl Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Charles Robin Smith, estimated the value of the stolen property at $975 and damage at $70.
*A DVD player and video-game equipment were stolen between Friday and Sunday after a door was pried open at a home in the 100 block of Kelway Drive, deputies said. The resident, William Travis Barnes, put a $440 value on the stolen property. No damage estimate was listed.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*About $80 and personal papers were stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a car window was smashed in a night club parking lot in the 800 block of Corporate Drive, police said. The stolen property belonged to Juana Ortega of Winterville. Damage was set at $200 to the car, owned by Emma O. Reynosa of Winterville.
*A black, four-door 1994 Nissan Altima was stolen Saturday from the 500 block of King Drive, police said. The owner and resident, S.J. Rodgers, put a $3,000 value on the car.
*A laptop computer was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from a home in the 100 block of Woodsmill Road, police said. The resident, Terasina Hayes, said it was worth $1,600.
