Two quick-thinking clerks foiled a predawn armed robbery attempt today at a convenience store, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported. The suspects fled without getting any money.
The report said the first woman clerk had asked the second woman at about 2:45 a.m. to cover the counter at the Kwik Mart store at 2775 U.S. 117 South while she prepared water to mop the floor. Then a man came in to buy bread.
Seconds later a black man wearing a bandanna over his face and wielding a handgun told the employees that he was robbing the store, Deputy Michael Biggins wrote.
The first woman saw what was happening and crawled to a back room and called 911. At the same time, the armed man discovered that he could not get past a bulletproof glass shield to the cash register.
The customer told deputies that two more armed, masked men then entered the store.
One suspect pointed a gun at the customer and ordered him not to move while another tried to enter a side door. The second clerk was standing near the door and was recognized by one suspect. He then saw the first clerk push the alarm button, and he yelled, "She's hit the alarm." The three suspects fled outside.
Deputies tracked the suspects with their dog, Remco, from the store to the Wayne County Fairgrounds but lost the trail. Other evidence was recovered at the store.
The first suspect was described as wearing a black bandanna, a black shirt and blue jeans. The second wore a stocking cap, a white shirt and blue jeans. The third wore a bandanna with eye holes, a black shirt and blue jeans.
Anyone with information on this crime was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
Citizen's call helps
police arrest man
An alert citizen called Goldsboro police and said a man had broken into a rental home and shed in the 1200 block of North John Street. Within minutes, police arrested a man before he left and charged him with the crime.
A-shift officers had answered a call about a suspicious person at 12:30 p.m. Officer Bobby Smith was told that the man had broken into the home. Smith arrested the man while he was leaving the house.
Ricky J. Henderson, 25, of Denmark Street was charged with two felony counts of breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for Monday.
Damage during the break-in was estimated at $400 to a back door, a shed door and a water heater, police said. Several small items were stolen but were recovered.
Kitchen fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Thursday for a kitchen fire that caused about $13,000 in damages to a home at 1102 E. Pine St., a Goldsboro Fire Department official said.
A pan of grease was left on the stove, Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said.
No one was injured at the Lars Nelson home that was valued at $140,000. Contents were worth another $70,000, Whaley said. The home sustained about $10,000 in damages, and about $3,000 in contents were damaged, he said.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 4:06 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Two hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $18,050 Thursday in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $13,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:22 p.m. Thursday at East Ash Street and North Jefferson Avenue, police said. One driver, Kimnetta R. Coley, 27, of Argo Street, and her passenger, Edwanna Cox, 24, of East Spruce Street, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Coley was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Ms. Coley had started a left turn and her car collided with an oncoming, westbound sport utility vehicle. The other driver was identified as Tyl Lee McCarley, 32, of Smithfield.
*Damage was set at $5,050 in a three-vehicle crash at 7:50 p.m. Thursday on South Slocumb Street near East Chestnut Street, police said. One driver, Dallis Leon Ross, 58, of North Slocumb Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash, driving while impaired, driving while his license was revoked, reckless driving and expired registration. The other motorists were listed as Shanika Dortea Williams, 22, of Courtyard Circle and Nina Renae Crawford, 34, of Franklin Street.
Missing
A 15-year-old girl was reported missing Thursday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Tiffany Marie Manning of 902-A Hopkins St. was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 110 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion. When she was seen last at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, she was wearing a white T-shirt, blue capri pants and black shoes.
