celebration planned
Waynesborough Historical Village is making plans for next weekend's Summerfest celebration.
The annual event is a chance for visitors young and old to go back to the 1800s and enjoy the simple pleasures of the "good old days," says Colleen Baker, administrator of the village.
Summerfest will take place this coming Saturday and Sunday. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 to 5 on Sunday.
Both days include a Civil War living history, quilt display and raffle, rabbit rodeo, vendors, line and square dancing, old timey games, hourly cannon fire and a 'raid on the village.'
Saturday activities feature a Dutch Oven Cookoff and watermelon eating and seed spitting contests. Activities on Sunday include an 1800s-style church service and a 'village jam' Sunday afternoon. Visitors are invited to bring musical instruments to join in on the fun.
Duplin wins grant
The Duplin County Planning Department will receive a $700,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce Division of Community Assistance.
The award was in the form of a Community Development Block Grant for Concentrated Needs.
Duplin County will use this grant program to rehabilitate homes, relocate families and to eliminate severe water and sewer problems. Some individuals will benefit from paved or resurfaced streets and installation of drainage lines. This funding has been approved to relocate six families and evaluate 26 others for repairs or relocation.
