MOUNT OLIVE -- Police are searching for a suspect in a Thursday morning shooting that ended in the death of a Goldsboro woman.
Jennifer Louise McArthur, 22, of Fairview Circle, was visiting Mount Olive at the time of the incident.
Ms. McArthur had a pulse when Mount Olive police officers arrived to investigate the shooting, which occurred around 2 a.m. at a home on Daly Boulevard.
She was dead on arrival at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Several people were in the apartment at the time and followed the ambulance to the hospital, Police Chief Emmett Ballree said this morning. He said there were four, possibly five, people in the apartment when police arrived.
He said all investigators know at this point is the shot was fired from outside the building.
"We don't even know if they drove by," he said. "For all we know, it might have been somebody there."
Investigators spent the day Thursday following leads.
Officers were given a name to investigate, Ballree said, but it was simply a starting point. Police are still not sure of what sparked the shots or who pulled the trigger.
A report has been filed in the case, but there are some details the investigating officers are keeping quiet as their search for a suspect continues, he said.
"You listen and follow up on everything, but a lot of times information is hearsay and nothing develops out of it," Ballree said.
Ballree said his department is still searching for any information that will lead to an arrest. Anyone who might have a tip about the shooting or a suspect should call the police at 919-658-5031 or Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255.
