Officer assaulted
Officer Karen Powers of the Goldsboro Police Department was assaulted while attempting to arrest Acqushanta Atkinson, 26, on charges of drug possession, on the 700 block of Bryant Street. Atkinson swung his right fist, hitting Powers in the back. She was not injured. Atkinson, of Head Street, was apprehended.
DVDs returned
Family Dollar manager Joy Young reported a subject took and concealed four DVDs and tried to leave the store. The subject set off the store's alarm and returned two DVDs. Upon exiting, he set off the alarm a second time. A DVD then fell out of his pants, according to reports. When the subject ran, another DVD fell out of his pants. The items were recovered by employees. The subject headed west on Elm Street. He was described as a black male in his 30s, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 180 pounds, large build, with short, black hair and glasses.
Accidents
*Thomas Laverne Williams, 46, of Rowe Street, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital after his 2000 GMC collided with a 1997 Ford driven by Kristopher Ryan Campbell, 18, of Corbel Place. According to reports, Williams' vehicle crossed the center line when he reached for a drink while traveling north on Salem Church Road. Campbell swerved to avoid a collision, and Williams swerved back, according to the report. The vehicles sideswiped, and Williams' truck overturned. Damage was estimated at $17,000 total. Both drivers were charged with driving left of center.
*Terry Eugene Creech, 17, of Country Club Road, Mount Olive, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital after a single-vehicle accident. While traveling west on state road 1135 in Mount Olive, West's 1999 Ford crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left. His vehicle struck several trees before coming to rest on the roadway facing west. Creech was charged with careless reckless driving. Damage to his vehicle was set at $5,000.
*Heather Michelle Otellio, 18, of O'Berry Road, Dudley, was charged with exceeding a safe speed after her car overturned on state road 1130. Otellio was exiting a curve while traveling south when she lost control of her vehicle. The 1994 Honda overturned after striking a ditch and came to rest on its roof. Otellio was treated at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
*Santiago Luis Gomez, 18, of Nutgrass Street, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to see before turning after a three-car accident in Seven Springs. Gomez attempted to turn left from North Carolina 55 on state road 1948 when his vehicle was struck by a 2000 Kia driven by Casilda Soto Hernandez, 24, of Latino Drive, Seven Springs. Gomez's vehicle was pushed into a 2004 Toyota driven by Jamie Rodas Escobar, 26, of Faison. Total damage was set at $5,600.
Investigations
Wayne County and Goldsboro law enforcement officials are investigating the following incidents:
*Rodney Lamont Lovely of West Main Street, Eureka, reported a rear window on the passenger's side of his vehicle was broken. A witness reported seeing a juvenile black male throwing rocks at the vehicle and home.
*Malcolm Todd Kornegay of A/K Grading and Demolition of La Grange reported an 8-foot-by-16-foot Bobcat trailer and Cat bucket, valued at $6,700, missing from a construction site.
*Letha Mae Flowers reported a red high wheel push lawnmower, valued at $300, missing from her home on Rose Street.
*An unknown person damaged the parking lot of Target on Sunburst Drive by spray-painting the phrase "I (heart) Kayla Kim." Surveillance cameras at the store recorded a person driving up, exiting the vehicle, spray-painting and leaving the scene. The camera did not get a clear view of the vehicle's license plate, according to reports.
*An unknown vehicle sideswiped a 1994 Cadillac owned by Cherry Pinkney Jr. of Hopkins Street. The Cadillac was parked on Wayne Avenue when the incident occurred. Damage to the left front door and fender was reported at $800.
*James Howard Melvin of East Holly Street told officers he was approached by at least six young males on East Walnut Street. The subjects demanded Melvin's cell phone. Subjects are described as black males between the ages of 17 and 18. The phone, a Kyocera, was valued at $119.
*Melvin Lee Simms reported gunshots fired into his home on Byron Place while it was unoccupied. Simms told officers the gunfire came from the 3200 block of Central Heights Road, damaging three walls and a front window.
*Wanda Kay Outlaw of East James Street reported an unknown person entered her 1985 Chevrolet Caprice, taking a Pioneer car radio and approximately 50 compact discs while it was parked on the 100 block of South Williams Street. Value of the stolen items was set at $650.
*Edward O. Bagley of Magnolia Street reported an unknown person tried to pry open the passenger door of his 1986 Oldsmobile Delta 88 while it was parked at his home. Damage to the door frame was set at $500.
