The federal Base Realign-ment and Closure Commis-sion will hold a regional hearing Tuesday in Charlotte on the campus of Central Piedmont Community Col-lege.

Representatives from communities in North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia will have a chance to speak to commissioners on behalf of their military installations.

Representing Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will be Troy Pate, chairman of the N.C. Advisory Commission on Military Affairs and President of the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Support Council.

Representing North Carolina will be Sen. Elizabeth Dole, Gov. Mike Easley and Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue. Retired Gen. H. Hugh Shelton, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a North Carolina native, will speak to the commissioners as well.

Commissioners in attendance will be Philip Coyle, retired Gen. James T. Hill, Samuel K. Skinner and retired Admiral Harold W. Gehman Jr.

The hearing will take place from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Harris Conference Center. Doors open to the public at 11:30 a.m. For more information, people can visit the commission's Web site at www.brac.gov.

Seymour Johnson was not listed among the bases recommended for closure in a preliminary report issued by the Pentagon.

Overall, the state would lose 568 military jobs and gain 307 civilian jobs if the commission approves the Pentagon's recommendations and Congress agrees.
