Sheriff gives tips for safe holiday travel

Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders reminds residents to plan if they are traveling over the long July 4 weekend.
"To have a safe and fun Fourth of July weekend trip," the sheriff said, "don't forget these tips in preparing for and during your travels."
*Check your vehicle, making sure the cooling system, brakes, belts and tires are in good condition.
*Carry a can of "Fix-a-Flat," a flashlight, traffic flares, jumper cables and a gallon of water.
*Don't leave home without your driver's license, duplicate car keys, registration, auto insurance car and names and addresses of someone to contact in case of an emergency.
*Know where you are going to avoid getting lost. Carry a map of the area that you are visiting. Watch your fuel gauge and make sure your tank is full before traveling long stretches of open road.
*Make sure adults are wearing seat belts and children are in safety seats.
*Reduce your speed if the road is wet or fog restricts your visibility, and keep a safe distance behind the car in front of you.
*When you are tired, stop and take a break, because many collisions are caused by driver fatigue. Plan stops at well-lighted, populated areas.
*If you are camping, lock your camper or motor home. If you need help, your horn can be heard for a long way.
The sheriff also reminded residents that patrols will be increased on county roads over the weekend to locate drunk drivers, speeders and reckless drivers.
