Kandis Weeks, Crystal Vinson will represent city in pageants

Kandis Weeks will represent Wayne County as Miss Goldsboro at the 2005 Miss North Carolina Pageant at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh.

Representing Goldsboro in the Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant also at Memorial Auditorium is Crystal Michelle Vinson, a rising senior at Rosewood High School and daughter of Danny and Debbie Vinson.

Miss Weeks will compete with 29 other contestants from around the state. Preliminaries began Monday and run through Thursday and the finals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Miss Goldsboro will participate in the evening wear competition Tuesday, talent competition Wednesday, swimsuit and casual wear competition Thursday and interview Friday.

Miss Vinson has chosen Special Olympics as her community service platform. She attended the state games in Raleigh this month.

For her talent Tuesday night, she will sing "Birth of the Blues."

This is the first year there has been a national teen miss program.

Teen contestants compete along with the other contestants each night. But instead of a swimsuit competition, the teens will have a physical fitness competition.

The winner of the teen competition will win scholarships and prizes worth $15,000 and advance to the Miss America Outstanding Teen in Orlando, Fla.

The Miss North Carolina Pageant provides opportunities for young women to achieve their personal and professional ambitions.

Contestant also participate in community service activities and develop leadership skills that help them excel in their career and life goals.

The pageant is a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant.
