Wayne Uplift celebrates anniversary

Wayne Uplift Resources Association celebrated its 10th anniversary Thursday with an open house and ceremony at the organization's resource center on Edgerton Street.
About 50 people attended, including former and current association board members, agency partners and other supporters.
The event highlighted the association's achievements and the impact it has made on the community. Wayne Uplift has two branches, one at 1906 E. Edgerton St. in Goldsboro and another at 612 S. Breazeale Ave. in Mount Olive.
Gene Thomas, the executive director of the Goldsboro Housing Authority, was guest speaker for the ceremony. He said the working relationship between the two organizations was a key to the success of the Housing Authority.
"Without that partnership, I don't know where we'd be," he said.
Wayne Uplift offers a variety of programs to help city residents. Education programs enable students to work toward their GED. Computer labs and Internet access gives members of the community the opportunity to increase their knowledge and sharpen job skills. English classes afford adults whose primary language is not English a chance to improve their quality of life. The association's Home Program helps families work toward owning their own home. The Mop-and-Know workshop show residents how to better maintain their dwellings.
Other programs include outreach and prevention activities, the provision of food and clothing during emergencies, health education and screenings, parenting classes and student tutoring.
One group helped association officials observe the anniversary by putting on a show. More than a dozen members of the Girl Power program sang and performed to demonstrate how their activities help steer young women toward success.
