Army Reserve Pvt. Joshua T. McKown has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

McKown is the son of Brian McKown of New Bern and Sonya Johnson of O'Berry Road, Mount Olive. He is a 2002 graduate of Southern Wayne High School.

Marine Corps Cpl. Tomas D. Carroll, son of Levonne Carroll of Goldsbor and the Marines and Sailors of 2nd Force Service Support Group (Forward) are in the middle of a scheduled deployment in Western Iraq.

Carroll's unit deployed from Camp Lejeune in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and to provide logistical support including supplies, maintenance, transportation, landing support and health services for the II Marine Expeditionary Force.

He is a 2002 graduate of Goldsboro High School and joined the Marine Corps in June 2002.

Marine Corps Pfc. Steven E. Buckom, son of Constance L. Buckom and Ronnie Parks of Goldsboro and the Marines and Sailors of 2nd Force Service Support Group (Forward) are in the middle of a scheduled deployment in Western Iraq.

Buckom's unit deployed from Camp Lejeune in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and to provide logistical support including supplies, maintenance, transportation, landing support and health services for the II Marine Expeditionary Force.

He is a 2002 graduate of Goldsboro High School and joined the Marine Corps in July 2002.

Navy Seaman Recruit Tamango N. Tyler, son of Carolyn V. Tyler of Goldsboro and Gragery L. Tyler of Goldsboro, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, he completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Tyler is a 2004 graduate of Goldsboro High School of Goldsboro.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Rodney N. Bullock, a 1985 graduate of Goldsboro High School is currently deployed as part of the USS Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group in support of Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom. Bullock joined the Navy in June 1985.

Army Pvt. Anthony C. Alexander Jr. has graduated from basic combat military training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the eight weeks of training, he studied the Army mission and received instruction in drill and ceremonies, rifle marksmanship, weapons, map reading, tactics, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, Army history, core values and traditions, and special training in human relations.

Alexander is a 2001 graduate of James Kenan High School.
