Suspect
sought
Goldsboro police and Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers are seeking information on the identity of a man who cashed checks that were stolen from Salisbury AME Zion Church in Pikeville. The man passed the checks May 10 and May 12 at different BB&T branches in Goldsboro.
His photo was obtained from the bank's surveillance camera. He was described as black, 6-feet tall with a slim build. He wore a dark bandanna.
Anyone with information on this crime or any other crime in Wayne County is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they might be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
Man robbed
A Goldsboro man was assaulted and robbed Thursday by two men in the 400 block of North Carolina Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Larry James Brown Jr. told officers that he was walking home at about 2:45 p.m., when two black men approached him from behind. Brown said one suspect put a weapon in his back and struck him on the head, knocking him to the ground. Both suspects then went through Brown's pockets, and one kicked out Brown's front tooth, the report said.
Brown went to his home and called for help. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Brown described the suspects only as being about 25 years old.
Driver injured
A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $18,200 in a one-truck wreck Thursday night on South George Street near Wayne Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Douglas Alan Harrell, 21, of Hood Drive was being treated today at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
The report said Harrell's northbound pickup crossed the center line at about 11:40 p.m. and struck a steel power transmission pole and a wooden railing at 921 S. George St. before stopping. He was charged with a safe-movement violation. His pickup, valued at $8,000, was demolished. Damage was set at $10,000 to the power pole and $200 to the railing.
Investigations
Wayne County law enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, a 25-inch television, a radio with a remote control and a video cassette recorder were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from a home in the 300 block of Crows Foot Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The owner, Scott Allen Moody of Mount Olive, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,300 and damage at $50.
*A sink, an exhaust fan, three kitchen cabinets, a ceiling fan and three light fixtures were stolen between May 20 and Thursday after a door and a window were damaged at a home in the 1000 block of North Center Street, Goldsboro police said. The stolen property, owned by Henry Raynor of Dudley, was valued at $615. Damage was set at $210.
*A push lawn mower and silverware were stolen between June 9 and Thursday after windows were damaged at a rental home in the 500 block of North Leslie Street, police said. The owner, Kenneth Baransky, estimated the stolen property's value at $465 and damage at $150.
*Clothing, food and cigarettes were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 1700 block of Courtyard Circle, police said. The resident, P.G. Best, put a $368 value on the stolen property and set damage at $25.
*About $1,510 worth of property was stolen between Tuesday and Thursday from a shed in the 800 block of East Mulberry Street, police said. The resident, Thomas R. Marlow, said eight 18-volt batteries, a window air conditioner, tools and battery chargers were taken.
*A green 2000 Tomas moped was stolen Thursday from the ABC store parking lot at 206 E. Mulberry St., police said. The owner, Samuel Henry Merriweather, said he went in the store and when he returned, he saw two people riding away on the moped, valued at $1,300.
Second charge
A second man was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony crimes in connection with the theft of farm equipment from Indian Springs.
Randy Arive Johnson, 21, of Stanley Chapel Church Road, Mount Olive, was charged with breaking and entering and larceny and misdemeanor driving while his license was revoked. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $5,300 secured bond.
Cornelius Wayne Smith, 21, of Louisville Road was arrested Wednesday and charged with the same felony offenses. Some stolen property has been recovered, Detective Sgt. Ray Brogden said. Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers assisted in the investigation.
Drug charges
A 22-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday night by Goldsboro police and charged with felony and misdemeanor drug violations.
Samuel Constanza of North Berkeley Boulevard was charged with felony possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. He also was held on an outstanding arrest order for two traffic offenses. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $56,000 secured bond.
Sex charge
A 29-year-old man was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with failure to register as a sex offender.
Tavares L. Lane of Annette Lane, Pikeville, also was held on an outstanding arrest order and a charge of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of three secured bonds totaling $20,800.
Lane was being held in Nash County on other charges, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said.
