Former Goldsboro High coach faces sex charges

A former Goldsboro and North Lenoir High School coach has been charged by Lenoir County authorities with sexual assault on a female student.
Charles Stevens, 50, had a first appearance in Lenoir County court on Wednesday.
He turned himself into the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.
Stevens with two felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor, one felony count of committing a lewd and lascivious act with a minor and three counts of misdemeanor sexual battery. He had been released under $10,000 bond.
Stevens was fired by the Lenoir County School System last fall. A student at North Lenoir had earlier filed a complaint against him.
Lenoir County School officials would not comment on the reasons for Steven's dismissal, saying it was a personnel matter.
Stevens started teaching at North Lenoir in 2001. He had previously taught at Princeton, Eastern Wayne, West Brunswick and Havelock high schools as well as at Goldsboro High, where he coached the varsity boys basketball team.
Stevens resigned from the Wayne County Public Schools in September 2001. He had worked as a physical education teacher at Goldsboro Middle School and previously had worked at Dillard Middle School and had coached at Goldsboro High for four years.
He had been teaching special education at North Lenoir.
