The board of directors of Wayne Memorial Hospital and Wayne Health Corporation honored two of its leaders Tuesday.

Hospital president and CEO Bill Paugh was recognized for his five years of service. He celebrates his fifth anniversary in the job this month.

James Gouty was recognized for his seven years of service on the board of directors. He is leaving Wayne County for Asheboro after being promoted by BB&T.

A resolution of appreciation was read in Gouty's honor by board Chairman Jean Lee. She called him an effective leader who served the board with distinction, not only on a variety of committees but as its previous chairman.

Accepting an engraved crystal vase, Gouty said the occasion was bittersweet.

"I have been in Wayne County 15 years," he said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my association with this organization.

"I have had a lot of passion about this place."

Paugh came to Wayne County in 2000. He formerly served as president of St. Joseph Center for Life in Augusta, Ga.

Paugh was caught off guard when his name, purposely omitted from the agenda, was called. He said he continues to enjoy his affiliation with the hospital and its staff.

"I'm just fortunate to be associated with this organization," he said. "I'm so proud of the things we're doing and look forward to the things we'll be doing in the future.

"We're having a good time and hope we're serving the community."
