Hal Stewart honored
Goldsboro native Hal Stewart, who coached high school football championship teams at Richmond County and Garner, received the President Gerald R. Ford All-American High School Coach Award last weekend in Greensboro.
Stewart, who is retired from coaching, was honored at the All-American Football Foundation's 71st Banquet of Champions.
Marion Kirby, who coached at Edenton and Page high schools, also received the award.
More than two dozen other awards, mostly to college coaches and athletic directors, were handed out.
Appreciation barbecue
The Exchange Clubs of Goldsboro and Mount Olive and the Grantham Aero Club is holding a Law Enforcement Appreciation Barbecue pig picking from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Grantham Airport.
All law enforcement agencies that work in Wayne County have been invited.
State officials have also been invited, and the North Carolina National Guard Counter Drug Raid Team will be in attendance with their helicopters.
Jam on Thursday
The Coastline Band will bring a high-powered rock and soul sound to Center Street Jam on Thursday evening.
That is, weather permitting. The forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms again.
For those keeping score at home, it's Mother Nature 2, Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation 1 so far this year. But DGDC hopes to get back on track with the Coastline Band.
The Jam will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Waynesborough House parking lot on South Center Street. People may bring lawn chairs. Vendors will be selling hot dogs, pizza, barbecue, soft drinks and beer.
