City firefighters answered 169 calls during May

The Goldsboro Fire Department answered 169 fire or service calls in May, including four major structure fires.
Chief Bobby Greenfield said in his monthly report that the four fires caused about $34,450 in damages.
The largest damage amount, $28,000, resulted from a kitchen fire May 24 at 409 Creech St. When firefighters arrived, they found fire coming from the back of the house. Unattended cooking was blamed.
Damage to the home was estimated at $20,000, and damage to contents was set at $8,000. The home, owned by Henry Jones, was valued at $30,000, and contents were valued at $10,000.
A fire on May 9 in a sign at the It's Fashion store at 914 N. Spence Ave. caused about $4,000 in damages. When firefighters responded, they found the fire, quickly put it out and completed a salvage operation to ensure that the fire did not spread. The building was valued at $3 million.
A fire on May 3 at the old Department of Social Services annex at 1916 N. U.S. 117 Bypass started from debris that fell from a bathroom ceiling fan that had shorted out. The debris ignited a plastic toilet seat. Damage was put at $2,000. The building was valued at $375,000, and contents were valued at $75,000.
Firefighters were dispatched May 13 to a kitchen fire at 920 Carver Drive. They saw nothing on their arrival but then found light smoke. Damage was estimated at $350. Unattended cooking was blamed. The property was valued at $100,000 with contents valued at $10,000.
Fire Department personnel took part in 526 hours of company training and 1,773 hours of individual training.
