Fire destroys
mobile home
MOUNT OLIVE -- Five people escaped injury early today from a fire that consumed their mobile home at 105 Granger Place, a Mount Olive fire official said.
Assistant Fire Chief Greg Wiggins said that when firefighters arrived, "heavy fire was showing and flames were leaping into a tree endangering a mobile home next to it. It was totally involved."
The home, rented by Casqual Gomez, was valued at $3,500. Contents, valued at $500, also were destroyed. The home was owned by B&D Management Co. of Duplin County, Wiggins said.
The next-door mobile home, only about 30 feet away, was not damaged, he said.
The cause of the blaze was listed as undetermined, but Wiggins said it was not suspicious. The fire started around a water heater that the occupants, he said, had had trouble with it. Wiggins said the home was so badly burned that a cause could not be found.
Ten Mount Olive firefighters answered the 12:20 a.m. call with three trucks. Calypso assisted with about 12 volunteers and four trucks. They needed more than two hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
The occupants were put up to a Mount Olive motel.
Parole approved
in murder case
A 36-year-old Dudley man, serving 40 years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, will be paroled from state prison in a few days, the N.C. Post-Release and Supervision and Parole Commission said.
Shawn Royal, who had lived on Van Dyke Lane, was sentenced Jan. 11, 1995, in Wayne County Superior Court. He had been charged with first-degree murder.
Royal was being released under the mutual agreement parole program, or MAPP, an agreement among the offender, the commission and the prison system.
Royal had been approved for parole on March 3, 2006. After careful consideration, the commission decided to move up the date because of Royal's satisfactory compliance with conditions of the MAPP agreement.
The commission has the responsibility of considering parole for people charged with crimes before Oct. 1, 1994. But the state's current structured sentencing law eliminates parole for all offenses occurring on or after that date.
Jewelry theft
About $7,200 worth of jewelry was stolen between Sunday and Monday from a home in the 1500 block of Mount Carmel Church Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The resident, Gail R. Tetterson, reported the theft of a diamond bracelet and a diamond ring, the report said. The items were valued at $1,000.
Deborah Jo Grimes of Goldsboro reported the larceny of a diamond bracelet, a diamond watch, two antique diamond rings, two other diamond rings, a diamond cluster ring and a band with diamonds. The jewelry was valued at $6,200.
No sign of forced entry was reported.
Six hurt in wrecks
Six people were injured and damages were estimated at $58,710 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 5:01 p.m. Monday on Harding Drive near Fieldcrest Place, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Cynthia H. McGhee, 49, of Longview Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver was identified as Andree M. Flowers, 73, of Biltmore Drive.
*One driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 12:15 p.m. Monday at East Elm Street and South Spence Avenue, police said. Gloria Michelle Briggs, 26, of Dixie Trail was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other motorist, Julio C. Viloria, 21, of Wright Brothers Avenue, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Viloria's southbound car had collided with Ms. Briggs' westbound van. Damages were set at $210.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car wreck at 11:40 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 13 and Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Charles Anthony Brown, 40, and his passenger, Destiny Brown, 6, both of Randall Lane, were released after emergency-room treatment. Brown, who was going west, was charged with not having an operator's license. An eastbound driver who was making a left turn, Yamona Lee Underwood, 29, of Wayne Memorial Drive, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*An 11-year-old car was demolished in a wreck at 4:15 p.m. Friday on Antioch Road near Bartlett Road, the Highway Patrol said. The car crossed the center line in a curve, then ran off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned. The report said the driver received medical treatment from rescue and then fled. The car, valued at $6,000, was registered to William Durwood Crawford of Stoney Creek Church Road.
*Both vehicles were destroyed in a collision at 10:45 p.m. Friday at U.S. 70 and Leslie Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Don Lee Cooperwood, 40, of North Jackson Street, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign and driving while impaired. The other driver was listed as Shelden Neil Hendricks, 22, of Raleigh. The vehicles were valued at $22,000.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 9:20 p.m. Thursday at Sleepy Creek and Ruskin roads, the Highway Patrol said. An eastbound driver, Julie Morales, 27, of Van Dyke Lane, Dudley, was charged with improper passing. The report said Ms. Morales was passing a car that was starting a left turn. The other driver was listed as Victor Nelson Darden, 18, of Durham Lake Road, Dudley.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $12,000 in a two-car wreck at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Alice C. Edgerton, 34, and her passengers, Jeffery Edgerton, 33, and Travis Edgerton, 3, all of Kelway Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Edgerton, who was going north, was charged with a stoplight violation after her car collided with a westbound auto driven by Linwood Earl Smith, 45, of North Beston Road, LaGrange.
Drug charges
Two Goldsboro men were arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Angelo M. Burden, 31, of Walnut Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, conspiracy to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
*Leon Coley, 46, of Hare Road was charged with possession of cocaine and driving while his license was revoked. He was jailed in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A change-making machine was stolen between Sunday and Monday from The Car Wash at 173 Miller's Chapel Road, police said. The thief had entered through a broken window, then pried open an inside metal door and snatched the machine from a wall, the report said. The machine was valued at $3,000. Damage was set at $100.
*About $2,000, two air conditioners, a cash register and drinks were stolen between Sunday and Monday from the Hop and Shop convenience store at 303 A St., police said. The property was valued at $2,145, in addition to the cash.
*A $350 money order, prescription medicine, a pocketbook, videotapes and $200 were stolen Monday from a home in the 100 block of Swan Street, police said. The resident, V. Atkinson, put a $423 value on the property, in addition to the money order and cash.
