Speed blamed
in fatal crash
Excessive speed was blamed for the one-car wreck in which two people died last week, according to a Highway Patrol trooper's report.
The driver, Christopher Dale Harrell, 31, and his passenger, his mother, Brenda Lee Harrell, 56, both of 931 Edwards Store Road, Mount Olive, were killed late Wednesday night. Their bodies were found at 6:25 a.m. Thursday by a passerby, the report said.
Trooper J.S. Smith estimated the speed of the 1995 Buick at 70 mph, based on the evidence at the scene. The speed limit on the two-lane road is 55.
Smith wrote that another contributing factor was that the car crossed the center line. The trooper also said Harrell was not wearing a seat belt but his mother was buckled up.
Smith said the car ran off the right side in a left turn, then came back on the road, ran off the left side out of control, went airborne over a small creek and struck an embankment. The car, valued at $5,000, was destroyed.
$26,000 stolen
About $26,000 and other property was stolen Saturday from a home in the 100 block of Brook Terrace Road near Dudley, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The thief had smashed two windows to enter the home, the report said.
A safe, gold and silver coins, prescription medicine, and a man's and a woman's jewelry also were stolen. The resident, Victor James Lozir, estimated the value of the other stolen property at $5,219. Damages were set at $40.
Robbed
A man was robbed Saturday night of an unknown amount of money by two black men who barged into his apartment in the 800 block of North Taylor Street, Goldsboro police reported.
Areli Sanchez told police that he answered a knock of his door at about 11:25 p.m. The suspects pointed a gun at him, demanded his money, took it and fled south, the report said. Sanchez could not describe the intruders.
Cigarettes stolen
Fifty cartons of cigarettes -- Salems, Marlboros and Camels -- were stolen between Friday and Sunday from Johnny's Convenient Mart at 766 N.C. 111 South, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The thief had smashed a door glass, inflicting about $250 in damages to get inside, the report said. The cigarettes were valued at $1,400.
Sheriff's deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Two tillers, a canvas truck tarpaulin, an air compressor and a gas can were stolen between Saturday and Sunday from an office in the 1000 block of Stanley Chapel Church Road, deputies said. The owner, Lawrence L. Barwick, put a $2,406 value on the property.
*Two speakers, a pocket knife and $5 were stolen between Friday and Saturday after a windshield and both side windows on a disabled car were smashed on Lanetown Road, deputies said. The owner, Janette M. Hall of Pikeville, estimated the value of the stolen property at $75 and damage at $250.
*Two Kirby vacuum cleaners were stolen Saturday from a van in the 100 block of Deluxe Drive, deputies said. The resident, Antonio M. Yelverton, put a $3,000 value on the vacuums.
*A yellow Suzuki dirt bike with a 9.6 horsepower motor was stolen Friday from a garage in the 900 block of McArthur Pond Road, deputies said. The owner and resident, Steven Alton Carlton, said the bike was worth $3,000.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Wireless headphones and costume jewelry were stolen Sunday after a window was damaged at a home in the 800 block of North Audubon Avenue, police said. The resident, V. O'Quinn, estimated the value of the stolen property at $120 and damage at $30.
*A DVD player was stolen Sunday after a window was broken at an apartment in the 1200 block of Peachtree Street, police said. The resident, V. Johnson, put a $100 value on the player. No damage estimate was listed.
Five hurt in wrecks
Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $16,200 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 12:08 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 70 and Claridge Nursery Road, the Highway Patrol said. Matthew Wayne Dixon, 19, of Riverbend Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Dixon was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver was identified as Sandra L. Smith-Mims, 48, of Raleigh. Damages were set at $3,700.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday at Genoa and Pecan roads, the Highway Patrol said. Jeffrey Dean Vencil, 39, of Peggy Lane was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was listed as Falecial Quachell Anderson, 33, of Rose Court, Dudley. Damages were put at $4,000.
*Three people were injured in a one-car wreck at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday on Salem Church Road near Belfast Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Roxana Caralina Molina, 29, and her passengers, David Ochoa, 6, and Gabriela Ochoa, 4, all of Nahunta Road, Pikeville, were released after emergency-room treatment. The report said the car had run off the right side, the driver overcorrected the steering, she lost control of the car and it ran off the left side and overturned. Ms. Molina was charged with driving left of center. The car, valued at $3,500, was demolished.
*A pickup truck sustained about $5,000 in damages at 6:59 a.m. Tuesday on Indian Springs Road, near Sanderson Road, where it collided with a deer, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Charles Michael Pless, 44, of New Bern, was not injured or charged.
