Blaze destroys
double-wide
DUDLEY -- A predawn fire, caused by unattended cooking, destroyed an older double-wide mobile home at 186 Jones and Joyner Lane, a fire official said today.
Dudley Fire Chief Kendall Lee said the resident was cooking, then left the kitchen, went to another room, came back and found the kitchen and cabinets on fire.
The resident, Ervin Jones, scrambled outside and called for help. He was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment of an asthma attack and then returned before firefighters left, Lee said.
Lee said the home had several additions, including a room in the back, a carport and a second roof.
"Our biggest chore was fighting the fire between the roofs," the chief said.
About 15 Dudley volunteers answered the 3 a.m. call with three trucks. Indian Springs responded with three trucks, and Arrington brought two to assist with manpower and a water shuttle from a hydrant. They needed about five hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
The home was valued at $80,000, and contents were worth $30,000, Lee said.
Jones and Joyner Lane is a dirt path that leads off Eagles Nest Road.
Checkpoint
leads to charges
A two-hour Goldsboro police checkpoint to enforce the use of passenger restraints on Wednesday resulted in 88 offenses, including 41 seat-belt violations.
One man was charged with numerous firearms offenses.
Thirty officers from three patrol shifts, the park police, warrants division and crime prevention unit conducted a "Click It or Ticket" checkpoint from 10 a.m. to noon at New Hope Road and Shelley Drive.
Five minutes before the checkpoint was stopped, Richard Lewis Beamon, 59, of Leonard Drive was charged with two felonies, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a stolen firearm, and seven misdemeanors -- carrying a concealed weapon, driving while his license was revoked, no registration, fictitious registration, borrowing a registration plate, no liability insurance and a seat-belt violation.
Beamon was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Police also charged three people with driving while their license was revoked and 37 with other traffic offenses.
The campaign to encourage use of seat belts and child safety seats started May 23 and will continue through June 12 across North Carolina.
Two hurt
in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $9,600 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-car collision at 2 p.m. Thursday at East Elm Street and South Audubon Avenue, Goldsboro police said. James Andrew Holder, 45, of East Walnut Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Janice P. Bishop, 49, of Lou Alma Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Holder was charged with driving while his license was revoked. Damages were set at $2,900.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 4:45 p.m. Thursday on Wayne Memorial Drive near New Hope Road, police said. One motorist, Stacey Nicole Goff, 21, of Ballance Road, Fremont, was charged with failure to reduce speed and driving while her license was revoked after the rear-end crash. The other driver was identified as Dominique Shanelle Wellington, 16, of Bunche Drive.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday on Old Grantham Road near Brockwood Avenue, the Highway Patrol said. Shana Tenille Randolph, 25, of Vanderbilt Circle was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with an equipment violation. Her car ran off the right side and struck a ditch and a speed limit sign. Damages were put at $700.
Chase ends
in arrest
A 21-year-old man from Dudley was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police following a brief vehicle chase in the downtown area.
Julius Ervin Jones of Hopesway Drive was apprehended at about 10 a.m. at William and Chestnut streets. As Jones was being taken into custody, he spit in the face of Officer J.T. Beeken, reports said.
Jones was charged with felonious malicious conduct by a prisoner and seven misdemeanors -- four counts of resisting arrest and one count of reckless driving, failure to heed blue lights or siren and assault on a law-enforcement officer. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Missing
Two teenage sisters who live at 3115 Grantham School Road have been reported missing by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
*Anastasia T. Lewis, 18, was described as black, 4-feet-5 and 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 4 p.m. Saturday, she was wearing a pink shirt and blue jeans.
*Andreanna A. Lewis, 15, was described as black, 5-feet and 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She wore a pink sweatpants and a pink and white top.
Anyone with information on the location of either girl was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Fraud charges
Goldsboro police arrested a 46-year-old man on three felony fraud charges.
David Earl Lewis of Quail Drive was charged with two counts of forgery and one count of uttering. He was accused of passing a stolen check May 23 at First Citizens Bank on Ash Street, Investigator Dwayne E. Dean said. Lewis was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. Investigator W.P. VanWijk assisted in the case.
DVDs stolen
About 135 DVD movies were stolen Thursday from a mobile home at Casey's Trailer Lodge at 1700 S. Slocumb St., according to a Goldsboro police report. The thieves had broken a window to get inside, the report said. The movies, owned by the resident, Francisco Gomez, were valued at $1,350. Damage was set at $100.
A witness saw two women leaving the home with a trash bag filled with the movies. A few fell out as the suspects fled, police said.
