Faith Christian students sweep scholastic shoot-out

Faith Christian Academy students made a clean sweep during the third annual scholastic shoot-out competition, held recently at Dillard Middle School.
Sponsored by Smart Choices for Youth, formerly Wayne County Youth Outreach, and Coca Cola, students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades at Dillard, Goldsboro, and Mount Olive middle schools also participated. Teams earned points for answering questions and then shooting a bonus free-throw in the single-elimination tournament.
Daryl Woodard, director of Smart Choices for Youth, said each school was allowed up to four teams per grade, with four people on each team. They were given a variety of questions in such areas as math and history, with two points given for each correct answer and an additional point possible if the team member then made a basket with the free throw.
Faith Christian's sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teams walked away the winners, receiving a traveling trophy for each team, that will remain at the school until next year's competition. Individual team members were each given a plaque and a medallion.
"It was very competitive," Woodard said. "There were several overtimes."
He called the event "good, clean fun" and said it is a tradition he wants to see continue.
"The partnership that we have with Coca Cola and the schools that participate is phenomenal," he said.
"This was one of the best ones we have ever had. Teams were well-prepared, faculty and staff at each one of the schools got the kids ready to compete."
