Man is charged
in school theft
FREMONT -- A traffic stop Thursday led to the arrest of a man who was charged with the theft of about $5,000 in property from Norwayne Middle School and seven teachers.
The school break-in and theft had been reported about six hours earlier Thursday to the Sheriff's Office.
First Sgt. Max Staps checked the license plate on a car near Olivia Lane and Slaughter Street and found the vehicle was stolen from Wilson. When he looked inside the car, he found items stamped with "Property of Wayne County" in the back seat.
The driver, Delbert Orlando Owens, 27, of West Hill Street, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods, possession of a stolen car and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He also was charged with three misdemeanors -- carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and driving while his license was revoked. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $150,000 secured bond.
Other charges will be sought through grand jury indictments, detectives said.
Stolen from the school were a laptop computer, two digital cameras, three visual projectors, a 40-inch television with a DVD player and a video cassette recorder, 44 compact discs, a camcorder, a radio with a tape player and DVD player and other items.
The seven teachers reported the theft of cash, a safe, three VCR-DVD players, a digital camera and other property.
Some property has been recovered, but other items are missing. Anyone with information about the crime should call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
Staps was assisted by Sheriff's Cpl. Kenneth Lupton, Sgt. Jeff Williams and Detective Sgts. Ray Brogden, Mike Reid and Tom Flores.
Felony sex charges

A 36-year-old man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with four felony sex offenses.
Edgar E. O'Quinn of Beaver Drive, Dudley, was charged with two counts each of first-degree rape and first-degree sexual offense. He was accused of assaulting two 11-year-old girls, Detective Sgt. Dean Roscoe said. O'Quinn was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $450,000 secured bond.
Jewelry theft
About $33,520 worth of jewelry was stolen between May 19 and Thursday from a home in the 600 block of North Beston Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The resident, Dorothy G. Whitehurst, reported the theft of seven diamond rings, a 1937 Wheat Swamp High School class ring, a ruby ring, a sapphire ring and an aquamarine ring.
Collisions
Damages were estimated at $13,800 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-car collision at 8:52 p.m. Thursday at Cuyler Best Road and Forest Hills Drive, Goldsboro police said. Both drivers -- Rebecca Joann Yearsin, 22, of Jacksonville and Bethany Marie Twarozynski, 18, of Forest Hills Drive -- said they had the green light. No charges were filed.
*Damages were estimated at $5,800 in a two-car crash at 3:47 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 70 near Westwood Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One motorist, Erin Leigh Gamble, 17, of Friendly Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. The other driver was identified as David Willis Lupton, 49, of New Bern.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A television, a slide projector, a sewing machine and a necklace were stolen Thursday from a home in the 800 block of LaGrange Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The resident, Minnie Matthews, estimated the value of the stolen property at $620 and damage at $250.
*Computer equipment, a television, a combination DVD and video cassette recorder, a microwave oven, a San Francisco picture and cash were stolen Thursday after a door glass was smashed in at a home in the 100 block of Dog Pond Road, deputies said. The resident, Colette Smith, estimated the property's value at $1,632 and damage at $250.
Theft reports
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Dentures, cosmetics and perfume were stolen between May 11 and Thursday from an unlocked car in the Wayne Memorial Hospital parking lot, police said. The owner, June C. Campbell of Pikeville, estimated the value of the stolen property at $3,593.
*A bicycle and a bike motor were stolen between Tuesday and Thursday after a door to a storage room for an apartment in the 1700 block of Dogwood Road was pried open, police said. The resident, Mary Tucker, said the property was worth $785. Several other storage rooms also may have been pried open, but nothing was stolen, the report said.
*A car battery was stolen Thursday after a car window was smashed in the 900 block of Evergreen Avenue, police said. The resident, G.D. Riddick, put a $75 value on the battery. Damage was set at $100.
Drug charges
A 21-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police at Elm and Lee streets and charged with two felony drug offenses.
Marrio Kornegay of South John Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
