GPD officer shoots suspect at traffic stop

A Goldsboro police officer shot a man during a scuffle at a traffic stop Thursday night.
The suspect, Tremayne Navaris Carmichael, 19, of Beech Street, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was listed today in stable condition.
The officer, Stephen Powers, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the emergency room, a police report said.
At about 7 p.m., Powers was looking for a particular car when he saw what he thought was the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in the 900 block of Fourth Street. A police report said the driver got out of the green Volvo, fought with the officer and drew a handgun. Powers then fired at the suspect.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Police Chief Tim Bell said today that his office followed department procedures and contacted the State Bureau of Investigation, which is conducting an inquiry into the shooting.
As a matter of routine policy, Bell said, Powers was placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
When he recovers sufficiently, Carmichael will be charged with several felony and misdemeanor offenses involving Powers and Sonja Cates, the second officer to arrive at the scene.
In the past, Carmichael pleaded guilty in 2004 to possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He served 40 days in jail and was sentenced to four to five months in prison. The term was suspended on condition that he complete 36 months of supervised probation, earn a high school diploma and pay a $200 fine and court costs. He also was convicted of misdemeanor assault on a female and larceny. He served a 50-day sentence for the assault charge and was put on probation for larceny.
