Murder charge
MOUNT OLIVE -- A second man was arrested Monday by Mount Olive police and charged with the murder of a former Goldsboro resident.
Jeffrey Leach, 31, of Glen Haven Drive, Goldsboro, was charged with the murder of Russell Lee Nickelson, 32, on May 16.
Leach's brother, Bobby Leach, 33, of Williamson Street, Mount Olive, was arrested last week and charged with murder. Nickelson's body was found at Church and Kornegay streets.
Police also are looking for several other people in connection with the fatal shooting.
Crime of the Week
A home invasion on Friday night in the 100 block of A Street has been designated by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as its latest "Crime of the Week."
The couple, 87 and 86 years old, were home at about 9:45 p.m. when an unknown black man broke their door open and came inside, police said. The intruder knocked the husband from his chair and tore his pants. Then the intruder grabbed money from the pants. The man and his wife then struck the intruder with a cane and mop and the intruder fled.
Anyone with information on this home invasion or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000, if their information leads to an arrest in felony cases.
Car doors stolen
A thief with an unusual fetish has stolen 14 right rear doors from junk vehicles in the 5200 block of U.S. 70 East, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
Monte B. Uzzell told deputies that about six months ago that someone was dealing the doors. Then Monday he said two more were stolen, and another resident also said he had two doors stolen. Each door was valued at $100.
Drugs in school
Two 16-year-old students at Eastern Wayne High School have been charged in citations with marijuana violations, a Wayne County sheriff's deputy reported.
Julia Katherine Walker of Jeffrey Drive, LaGrange, was charged with possession of the drug. The other student, Thomas Andrews Bradshaw II of Bradford Place, admitted that he had given her the drugs.
Nine hurt
in wrecks
Nine people were injured and damages were estimated at $96,600 in 13 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 9:14 a.m. Monday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Stoney Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Rodney Allen Edwards, 19, of Stonecutter Place, Pikeville, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. No charges were filed after a back tire on the car that he was driving went flat and the car ran off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned. Damage was set at $3,000.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $11,000 in a two-car crash at 1:53 p.m. Sunday at U.S. 70 and Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Rodrigo Sanchez, 18, of Newton Grove, was treated, admitted and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. His southbound driver, Benita Armenta Garcia, 24, of Newton Grove, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign after the car that he was driving collided with an eastbound auto. The other driver was identified as Amy Christine Thornton, 34, of New Bern.
*A driver from Mount Olive was injured in a two-car, hit-and-run collision at 12:20 a.m. Saturday on Old Mount Olive Road near Outlaw Road, the Highway Patrol said. Brandon Grimes, 18, of Andrews Circle was released after emergency-room treatment. A northbound car crossed the center line and collided with the southbound auto that Grimes was driving. The hit-and-run car was registered to Gamaliel Roblero of Darlene Drive, Dudley, the report said. Damages were put at $5,000.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 7:30 a.m. Friday on James Price Road near N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. James Vaughn, 30, of Kinston was transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he was listed today in fair condition, a spokeswoman said. The eastbound car that he was driving ran off the left side in a curve, then careened back across the road out of control, ran off the right side and overturned, the report said. No charges were filed. The car, valued at $5,000, was demolished.
*A truck driver was injured in a wreck at 11 a.m. Friday on N.C. 55 near N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. William Mark Bryan, 52, of Sleepy Creek Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed after the tractor-trailer ran off the right side, struck a ditch, came back on the road, ran off the left side and stopped partially in a ditch. Damage was set at $20,000.
*A driver of a state Transportation Department truck was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 3:15 p.m. Friday on U.S. 70 near Perkins Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. Charles Whitfield, 49, of N.C. 581 South was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Maria Margaret Carlotti, 24, of N.C. 111 South, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were put at $800.
*Damages were estimated at $9,500 in a two-car collision at 8:05 a.m. Friday at O'Berry Center Road and Marshall Street, the Highway Patrol said. An eastbound driver, Kelvin Donelle Lewis, 43, of Herring Road, LaGrange, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The report said his car had collided with a southbound auto driven by Petru Gauril Acris, 48, of Raleigh.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-truck crash at 7:57 a.m. Thursday on Buck Swamp Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, William Allen Ingram II, 25, of Crossbow Drive, Pikeville, was charged with improper passing. The report said the westbound pickup that Ingram was driving started to pass a tractor-trailer in a no-passing zone. Patrick James Pretty, 33, of Middlesex was turning the big rig into the George Whitfield Sports Complex.
*A motorist was injured in a two-vehicle collision in which the damages totaled about $100, the Highway Patrol said. Carlita Wazette Williams, 35, of Colonial Terrace Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The collision occurred at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and Old Mount Olive Road. The other driver, Robert Alton Bartlett, 32, of Becton Circle, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*The driver of a tractor-trailer truck was charged with reckless driving at 2:10 p.m. Thursday after the big rig ran off the right side of N.C. 55 near Grantham School Road, careened across the left lane out of control and overturned down an embankment, the Highway Patrol said. Franklin Arnold McLean, 44, of Lumberton was not injured. But his rig sustained about $12,000 in damages.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured and damages were estimated at $9,500 in a three-car wreck at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday at Tommy's and Hare roads, the Highway Patrol said. Felicia Tara Oates Batts, 41, of Randall Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. A northbound motorist, Bertha Rene Holmes, 65, of Brazil Street, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The impact of the crash sent Ms. Holmes' car into a stopped southbound car operated by Betsy H. Harris, 58, of Stoney Creek Church Road.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 11:03 a.m. Wednesday at U.S. 117 and O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Sherrisco Kornegay, 18, of East Franklin Street, Mount Olive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Her driver, Joseph Warren, 76, of East Maple Street, Mount Olive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said that Warren had tried to make a left turn from the right lane and his sport utility vehicle collided with a pickup truck in the left lane. The other driver was listed as James Mark Sasser, 34, of West Main Street, Mount Olive. Damages were put at $4,700.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $9,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday at U.S. 117 and Belfast Road, the Highway Patrol said. Lauren Elizabeth Allen, 20, of Grand Street, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. She also was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign after her car had collided with a southbound sport utility vehicle, the report said. The other driver was Donald Herschel Baldwin, 57, of Daffodil Drive, Dudley.
Jewelry stolen
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*More than $4,850 worth of jewelry was stolen between Sunday and Monday from a hotel room at 2302 Norwood Ave., police said. The hotel guest, Ann D. Walker of Morehead City, reported the theft of a diamond tennis bracelet, a diamond pendant, a pearl necklace and bracelet, a gold bracelet and a pair of earrings.
*A combination television, DVD player and video cassette recorder and a compact disc player were stolen between May 14 and Monday from an apartment in the 400 block of North Carolina Street, police said. The thief had damaged a door and a screen to get inside. The resident, R.E. Williams, estimated the value of the stolen property at $600. Damage was set at $300.
*A two-way radio, a card book, a sketchbook and other property were stolen before dawn today from an unlocked car in a parking lot in the 1700 block of East Beech Street, police said. The owner, Jim H. Tomlin of Goldsboro, put a $1,325 value on the stolen property.
*A red, four-door 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier was stolen Monday from the Food Lion parking lot on North Spence Avenue, police said. The owner, Tanesha N. Chestnutt of Mount Olive, said the car was worth $4,000.
Damage charge
A 22-year-old man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with damage to a vending machine.
Shaun Thomas Andrews of Farmview Lane was accused of damaging a machine March 6 at Hurry Clean Carwash on Parkway Drive, Investigator W.P. VanWijk said. Andrews was released from custody on a $1,000 unsecured bond.
