More than 1,000 students will be taking classes at Wayne Community College this summer.
A big percentage of them are university students taking courses that the college makes available, said Dr. Kay Albertson, the vice president for academic affairs at WCC. More than 100 university students are signed up for classes, she said.
The University of North Carolina system reached an agreement in the late 1990s with the community college system to allow students to take crossover classes.
"It's something the community college system is proud of, and the university system should be proud of it, too," Albertson said.
If a student follows the curriculum laid out for college transfer, she said, that student is assured of being accepted at an in-state university.
Summer session began May 17 and runs through July 29.
Registration continues through May 27 for classes on base that start May 31.
