Duplin EMS hands out coloring books

Kindergarten children in all Duplin elementary schools have received a coloring book aimed at helping them be unafraid if an ambulance has to come for them.
The sight of an ambulance lumbering up to the door often terrifies small children, Duplin Emergency Medical Services Curtis Brock said last week when he announced his department was going to all of the elementary schools to talk to the children.
His staff members printed the coloring book off the Internet, some times volunteering their time off to copy the pages and put the 500 books together.
"Once you open the back door and let them come in and turn on the light and siren, they're OK," Brock said. "They go in the back and exit out the side."
He said the first drop-off was set for last Wednesday at North Duplin Elementary School. The staff members explained about what paramedics do when they come to help people who are in accidents. They showed the splints that go on broken arms and legs and tell how they won't hurt, but they're made to help.
