Bank robber
strikes again?
A man matching the description of the person who robbed a Fremont bank Tuesday may have struck again today. A bank in Rocky Mount was held up by a masked gunman.
Fremont Police Chief Ben Reid Jr. said he was exchanging information with Rocky Mount police to determine if the same person committed both robberies.
Reid said the man in the Rocky Mount holdup was described as 6-feet-2 and he wore a black mask and a burgundy jacket with a hood. He displayed a silver handgun and fled on foot. No vehicle description was available.
The man who robbed The Heritage Bank in Fremont on Tuesday fled in a white Buick car that had been reported stolen Monday in Wilson.
Store robberies
Two convenience stores were robbed Wednesday by two young black men who fled with an undetermined amount of money, according to Goldsboro police reports.
A man clerk told police that the two suspects entered Bob's No. 2 at 1717 S. Slocumb St. at about 12:30 a.m., displayed a handgun, grabbed the money and fled.
A woman clerk reported that the two suspects entered The Pantry at 600 N. Spence Ave. at about 6:10 a.m., displayed a handgun and demanded money. The suspects were described as being between 16 and about 20 years old. The gunman was described as being 5-foot-5 to 5-7 and 130 to 170 pounds. He wore a white T-shirt, a black jacket and dark pants.
Two young men with similar descriptions also were blamed for the weekend holdups of another convenience store and a pizza delivery man.
Break-in
A citizen's call to Wayne County dispatchers on Wednesday about a break-in of a storage building on Antioch Road enabled sheriff's deputies to respond and arrest two men at the scene.
The suspects had broken into a shed, removed a four-wheeler and were trying to push it away, the report said.
The home also was broken into Monday, and one of the two men was charged with both break-ins. Bobby Ray Meadows, 23, of Rachel Drive was charged with two felony counts each of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond. Carlos Humberto Zapata, 17, of Rachel Drive was charged with one felony count of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was jailed in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Accidents
Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $54,950 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both drivers were injured and both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 10:26 a.m. Wednesday at East Mulberry Street and North Jefferson Avenue . Jasmine N. Woods, 20, of North Claiborne Street and H.B. Barnes, 75, of Washington Court were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ms. Woods was charged with a stop-sign violation. The vehicles were valued at $15,000.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday in the Pinewood Square parking lot in the 1000 block of North Spence Avenue. Pauline F. Coley, 72, of Brentwood Drive, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A driver from Dudley was injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at U.S. 70 and Whitley Church Road. Linda Faye Johnson, 44, of Old Mount Olive Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Margie Gilchrist, 66, of Hinnant Street, Princeton, was charged with failure to reduce speed . Damages were set at $3,200.
*A passenger from Dudley was injured in a two-car collision at 10:01 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 117 Alternate near O'Berry Road. Keith Lewis, 36, of Rhodes Drive left the hospital against medical advice, a hospital spokesman said. Dorsey Lee Duncan, 52, of South Carolina Street, was charged with a yield violation. Damages were put at $900.
*A truck was destroyed in a wreck at 1 p.m. Tuesday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Gurley Avenue. James Derek Hubbard, 44, of Antioch Road, was charged with driving left of center. The truck was valued at $5,000.
Clothes stolen
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*About $2,835 worth of clothing was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from City High Clothing at 1003 N. Berkeley Blvd. The thief had smashed the front door to get inside. The clothing included an NBA jacket, a dozen throwback jerseys, and dresses, jeans, shirts, pants ,baby outfits, T-shirts, eight pairs of sunglasses and two watches. Compact discs and DVDs, valued at $550, also were stolen.
*Candy and sodas were stolen between Monday and Wednesday from a concession stand at Grantham School at 178 Grantham School Road. The stolen property was valued at $200. Damage was set at $350.
*Three watches were stolen Wednesday after a door glass was smashed in a home in the 200 block of Dollard Town Road. Thomas Jason Hall, estimated the value of the watches at $300 and damage at $100.
