Eight students receive scholarships

Eight students from Wayne County Public Schools have been awarded college scholarships for the fall.
This is the third year funds from the Emmet and Mary Robinson Charitable Trust are being awarded to students seeking degrees in nursing, medicine, agriculture or ministry in the Presbyterian or Episcopal faiths. The distribution of these awards marks the program's third year.
Students can apply the scholarships toward a college of their choosing for four years and do not have to pay back the funds. Selection is based upon financial need, academic record and character.
More than $109,650 has been awarded since the effort began three years ago.
Dr. Sandra McCullen, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction, saluted the Robinsons' philanthropic giving and the student recipients afforded the opportunity to pursue their careers in the targeted professional areas.
"I know that Emmet and Mary would be pleased with the manner in which their trust is being managed for these worthy goals," said Lindsay C. Warren, friend and attorney for the Robinson family.
With the awarding of these eight renewable scholarships, a total of 23 students from Wayne County Public Schools have benefited from the educational fund. Recipients are currently attending such colleges as North Carolina State University, East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Wayne Community College, Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Montreat College.
The award recipients for the 2005-06 school year include:
*Jessica Faison from Goldsboro High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derrick Faison, $2,000 scholarship to attend East Carolina University to pursue nursing
*Elliott Hicks, Spring Creek High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hicks, $2,000 to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study dentistry
*Morgan Parks, Spring Creek High, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Parks, $2,000 to attend ECU to study nursing
*Scarlett Joyner, Southern Wayne High, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Joyner, 1,500 to attend North Carolina State University to pursue a career involving teaching agriculture
*Cherish Youpee of Southern Wayne, daughter of Marvin Youpee and Cynthia Bauer, $1,500 to attend Wayne Community College to study nursing
*Stephany LaFlamme, Rosewood High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley LaFlamme, $2,000 to attend ECU to study nursing
*Jessica McCullen, Eastern Wayne High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McCullen, $1,500 to attend ECU to study nursing.
*Amber Rewis of Charles B. Aycock High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Higginbotham, $2,000 to attend East Carolina University to study nursing.
