Wayne County Commis-sioners will consider a resolution supporting traditional marriage at their meeting Tuesday at the urging of local Republicans.

Ed Wharton, chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party, submitted the resolution.

"Decisions by activist judges have challenged and disqualified state marriage statutes across the United States," Wharton wrote in his request to the commissioners.

Wharton said bills before the General Assembly specifically define legal marriage in North Carolina as being only between one man and one woman at one time.

"While the Wayne County Republican Party is taking the lead in bringing this issue to the county board, it is not a political issue," Wharton said. "The citizens of Wayne County, regardless of their political party affiliation, expect our board to take any action necessary to protect our family values."

At 11 a.m., the commissioners will sit as the county's Board of Equalization and Review. At that time, citizens can come in and complain about how their home or land is valued for property tax purposes.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county Courthouse.
