WCC Honor Society wins 18 awards

Wayne Community Col-lege's Honor Society has captured 18 awards.
Upsilon Chi, the college's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa -- the international honor society for two-year colleges -- was presented 18 awards at its annual regional conference.
This year's haul topped last year's record 12 awards for the chapter. The chapter earned more than $500 for workshops and conferences from scholarships that accompany some awards.
The chapter earned Five Star certification, the highest level possible, for the second consecutive year. The Five Star Program recognizes chapters for setting and achieving levels of participation in society programs. Only 18 of the 71 eligible chapters in the Carolinas Region earned the ranking.
WCC's chapter also earned a Most Improved Chapter Award for the second consecutive year.
It was a "five-ring" winner in the Carolinas Golden Rings Challenge: Linking The Gap To The Cure program. The chapter participated in both service programs dealing with conquering cancer, implementing prevention projects, fund raising, service, advocacy and children.
The chapter was named a "Carolinas Super Star" for outstanding performance in programming and participation in regional and international events.
The Upsilon Chi chapter picked up the Craig Pullen Leadership Hallmark Award, the Service Hallmark Award and the Fellowship Hallmark honorable mention. Because the chapter excelled in three of the society's four focus areas of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship, it also earned a Distinguished Chapter honorable mention.
The chapter's service project merited a Bruce R. Rallis Regional Service Award Honorable Mention, and its Web site received honorable mention.
Several individuals were honored. Named to the Carolinas Hall of Honor were chapter President Julie Hollowell, Vice President of Leadership Thomas Garrou and chapter member Shannon Lynch, all nominated by their fellow chapter members. Also presented were a Distinguished Chapter Member Award Honorable Mention to Miss Lynch, a Distinguished Chapter Officers Award to Garrou and a Distinguished Chapter President Award Honorable Mention to Mrs. Hollowell.
Gene Smith received the Horizon Award for senior advisors who have attained new levels of achievement in chapter programs.
Dr. Edward H. Wilson Jr. was one of three college presidents in the region honored for exemplary support to the society and their respective chapters with the Distinguished President Award.
