King hurt in wreck
Clyde Edward King, the former Major League baseball pitcher and New York Yankees' manager, was injured Tuesday in a two-vehicle collision at 11:10 a.m. on U.S. 70 East near N.C. 111, Goldsboro police said.
King, 81, of Stratford Road, was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
King told police that he had slowed because a vehicle had pulled out from the median in front of him. A following driver, Ryan Wilkins Cash, 19, of Kinston, could not stop in time and was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were estimated at $6,500.
Senior attacked
An 88-year-old woman was assaulted Tuesday night in her home by a man who then stole $300, a $494 check and her purse, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The victim, who lives on Laurel Street, told officers that a black man knocked on her door at about 9:20 p.m. When she answered it, the man barged inside, knocked her down, dragged her to the bedroom, grabbed her purse and fled, the report said. The victim suffered a cut wrist but declined hospital treatment.
The suspect was described only as wearing khaki pants.
Couple attacked
A man barged into a home in the 500 block of West Hill Street before dawn today and assaulted the couple inside, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The resident, Tamika Dawson, told deputies that the intruder smashed a front-door glass at about 2:45 a.m., hit her with a jack and ran into the bedroom, where he hit Clifton Leon Newborn of Kinston. The two men then fought, and furniture was damaged during the struggle, the report said.
The intruder fled outside, with Newborn in pursuit, the report said. The two fought again before Newborn ran to a neighbor's home and the suspect fled in a vehicle, deputies said.
Damage to two doors, a hutch, a mirror and a dresser was estimated at $425. Ms. Dawson also reported that a car tire, worth $50, was flattened. Several items were recovered, including the jack and a cap.
Driver hospitalized
A Goldsboro man who was injured in a two-car collision Tuesday at North Berkeley Boulevard and an exit ramp from Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, officials said.
Fire and rescue personnel had to cut the door from the car so that John Henry Bell Jr., 53, of North Virginia Street could be freed.
The other driver, Markus Tarelle Brunson, 16, of Rosewood Road, was charged by Goldsboro police with a stoplight violation. Damages were put at $16,000.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A man said he was assaulted Saturday by two men on Bryan Boulevard and his 2002 Milano scooter was stolen, deputies said in a report filed Tuesday. Laurence N. Hatem Jr. of Edwards Trailer Park said the scooter was worth $1,100. He could not describe the assailants.
*A black 1995 Ford Explorer was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from the 100 block of Angela Drive, deputies said. The owner and resident, Tracy B. Jackson, put an $8,000 value on the SUV.
*A Dell laptop computer was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from an unlocked car in the 200 block of Smith Drive, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Sam Harry Benton, said the computer, worth $1,800, is owned by his employer, Classic Industrial Services of Baton Rouge, La.
Student caught
with marijuana
A bag of marijuana was recovered Tuesday from a 12-year-old student at Norwayne Middle School, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report. The bag was found by a school employee in the boy's sock, the report said. Juvenile charges are pending.
Missing teen
A 15 year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Tuesday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Tiffany Marie Manning of 902-A Hopkins St. was described as black, 5-feet-3 and 110 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a light complexion. When she was last seen at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, she was wearing a pink blouse, pink capri pants and white shoes. Anyone with information on her location is asked to call police at 705-6572.
