Relay begins Friday

Wayne Community College will be the center of activity this weekend as the annual Relay for Life takes place.
The relay begins Friday at 4 p.m. and ends at noon Saturday. There will be an opening ceremony Friday at 6 p.m. when local cancer survivors will do their traditional lap around the track. At 9 p.m. there will be a luminaria ceremony.
The event wraps up Saturday with a closing ceremony at noon.
This year's goal is $500,000.
The Relay actually gets started Thursday with a cancer survivors' banquet. It will be held at 6 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Ed Ezzell, a cancer survivor, will talk about his experiences with the disease. Jimmie Ford will be the master of ceremonies.
There will be a light meal and door prizes.
Following is the entertainment schedule for the Relay Friday and Saturday.
Friday
4 p.m. -- Constance Coram, Katie McCloud, Stephen Reaves, Casey Sutton, LaRue Tart and Kandis Weeks (Miss Goldsboro).
4:45 p.m. -- Jaime Cox (2004 Relay Idol), Blair Mozingo, Amber Pender, Kristen Prosser, Sarah Richards, Nanette Smith and Cindy Bartlett and Amanda Whaley.
5:30 to 6 p.m. -- Big House Band from Stoney Creek Church.
6 p.m. -- Opening ceremony and cancer survivor's lap.
6:45 to 7 p.m. -- World Changers from Church on The Rock.
7 to 8 p.m. -- Linda Little and Holly Artis.
8 to 9 p.m. -- Royal Descendants.
9 p.m. -- Luminaria ceremony.
9:30 to 11 p.m. -- Flashback.
Saturday
9 a.m. -- Forehand Family Choir directed by Jay Sauls.
10:30 to 11 a.m. -- Slim and the Supreme Angels.
11 to 11:30 a.m. -- Shag Daddy Mike Overman.
11:30 to 11:45 a.m. -- Katie McCloud.
11:45 a.m. to noon - Andy Stovall.
12 p.m. -- Closing ceremony.
Stages will be set up and are being provided by Wayne Community College, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and Rosewood High School.
There is still time to be part of the event. Call 739-7905 or 736-3030 to purchase a luminary in honor or in memory of a cancer patient. To be part of the relay, simply come to Wayne Community College Friday or Saturday.
