Lumber thefts
A man who was arrested for a residential break-in was charged Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with the theft of plywood and particleboard from two new home construction sites.
During an investigation of a residential break-in Sunday on Becton Circle, Jeremy Crawford, 25, of Becton Circle and another man were linked to the theft of the lumber. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour and Deputy Chris Peedin discovered that both men had worked in the subdivision where the lumber was stolen April 19 and 25.
Crawford and Christopher Lee Bennett, 28, of Radford Drive were charged with one felony count of larceny and two felony counts of misdemeanor larceny. Crawford was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond. Bennett was jailed in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond. Detective Sgts. Shawn Harris and Carl Lancaster investigated the lumber thefts.
Sheriff Carey Winders said patrols had been increased in the areas where the lumber thefts occurred. He and other officers had spent many hours of surveillance in an attempt to catch the suspects.
8 injured in 7 wrecks
Eight people were injured and damages were estimated at $28,425 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Three people were injured in a car-motorcycle collision at 2:20 p.m. Sunday at Old Grantham and Woodland Church roads, the Highway Patrol said. The motorcyclist, Martin Edgar Merrill, 42, of Dandridge, Tenn., was stabilized and then transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was listed today in serious condition, a spokeswoman said. His passenger, Kerri Ann Ross, 37, of Piedmont Airline Road, and the driver of the car, Brittany Nicole Edwards, 16, of Thunder Swamp Road, Mount Olive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Edwards was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The report said she had started a left turn from Woodland Church Road and the car collided with the northbound motorcycle. Damages were set at $6,300.
*Two people were injured in a one-car wreck at 6:25 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 West near Hargrove Street, Goldsboro police said. The driver, Sylvester Alexander Jones, 60, of Vanceboro, and his passenger, Hannah Jones, 74, of New Bern, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Jones told police a tractor-trailer truck pulled out in front of him, and then he swerved to the right to avoid it. The car then struck the ditch and went 86 feet before stopping, police said. Damage was set at $1,000.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 11:24 a.m. Wednesday on West Holly Street near North George Street, police said. Jacqueline Angenette Johnson, 55, of Vanderbilt Circle was released after emergency room treatment. The other driver, Dana Calvin McKenzie, 52, of West Chelly Street, Warsaw, was charged with improper backing. Damages were put at $625.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a three-vehicle crash at 3:15 p.m. Monday on N.C. 111 near Allen Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Matthew Linwood Nunn, 18, of Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorists were identified as Shannon Marie Poandl, 19, of Barnwell Road, Dudley, and Carnice B. Pettit, 36, of Cricket Ridge Road, Mount Olive.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 9:20 a.m. Saturday at Indian Springs Road and Springcrest Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Amber King, 23, of Arrington Bridge Road, Seven Springs, was released after emergency room treatment. Her driver, Tammy W. King, 42, of Arrington Bridge Road, Seven Springs, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. The other driver was listed as Robert Ramirez, 23, of Edwina Kornegay Road, Calypso.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 3:20 p.m. Friday on Old Vineyard Road near Providence Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Betty Jewel Holloman, 57, of Gold Park Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency room treatment. The car ran off the right side of the gravel road, struck a ditch and overturned. The car, valued at $3,500, was demolished. No charges were filed.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car crash at 4:45 p.m. April 25 on U.S. 117 near N.C. 581 (Arrington Bridge Road), the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Chaz Izk Reid, 17, of Murphy Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was identified as Robert Lee Davis Jr., 51, of Gainey Drive.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A Cub Cadet riding lawn mower was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a carport in the 3600 block of N.C. 111 South, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Joseph L. Outlaw Jr., put a $3,000 value on it.
*A blue Isuzu moped was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from the 100 block of Round Top Lane, deputies said. The resident, Alan Kay Kegley, said the moped was worth $500.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A video-game system and alcoholic beverages were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 700 block of South Harding Drive, police said. The resident, Joshua Capen, estimated the value of the stolen property at more than $165 and damage at $100.
*A television monitor was stolen Wednesday after a car window was smashed in the 1800 block of North Berkeley Boulevard, police said. The owner, Antwana Jermel Pearson of Goldsboro, said the monitor had a $400 value. Damage was set at $200.
*A washing machine was stolen Wednesday from a home in the 600 block of Poplar Street, police said. The owner, Norman Lee Uzzell of Goldsboro, estimated the washer's value at $200 and damage at $400.
