House fire
FREMONT -- A fire that destroyed a two-unit apartment building at 408 S. Pine St. late Friday night has been ruled an accident, officials said Monday.
When Fremont volunteer firefighters arrived, they deemed the fire suspicious and contacted Wayne County Emergency Services. But Mel Powers Jr., assistant coordinator for Emergency Services, determined the fire was accidental.
Fremont, Pikeville and Eureka firefighters responded and needed several hours to put out the fire.
Fremont Fire Chief Donnie Wilkerson said the fire was difficult to extinquish. "We'd get it out one place, and it would come back. We couldn't get to some areas."
The occupant, Linda Bunch, got outside safely. The residents in the other apartment were out of town, Reid said.
The building, owned by Isaac Ryals Jr. of Fremont, was valued at $70,000.
Kitchen fire
Unattended cooking has been blamed for a kitchen fire that caused about $55,000 in damages to a home at 913 S. Slocumb St., Goldsboro fire officials reported Monday.
No one was injured in Friday's blaze at the one-floor home occupied by Robin Packer. Damage was estimated at $30,000 to the home and $25,000 to contents. The home, owned by Best Realty of Goldsboro, was valued at $60,000. The contents were destroyed.
Snake causes fire
Youngsters trying to burn a snake near an apartment set fire to the building at 126 Rockefeller Court on Friday, authorities reported Monday.
Damage was estimated at $850 to the vinyl siding. The Goldsboro Housing Authority building was valued at $50,000.
Church break-in
A 35-year-old LaGrange man was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a break-in at a church.
John Thomas Meleney of Firetower Road was accused of stealing $27.50 from Emmanuel Free Will Baptist Church at 5975 U.S. 70 East, Deputy Chuck Schaeffer said. He had admitted to a church employee that he had stolen the cash, Schaeffer's report said.
Meleney was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Arrested
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office arrested a 25-year-old man and charged him with breaking into a home Sunday.
Jeremy Ray Crawford of Becton Circle was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of an $8,000 secured bond.
Crawford was accused of breaking into a home on Becton Circle and stealing $345 worth of property. The property was recovered and returned to its owner.
Accidents
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $20,150 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Four people were injured and damages were set at $7,150 in a three-vehicle crash at 6:27 p.m. Sunday at N.C. 111 and Sandstone Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Jose Angel Santana, 24, of Willard Lane, Dudley, and another driver, Brandalynn Melissa Galloway, 25, of Sandstone Drive, and her passengers, Simone Lassiter, 25, of Pittman Street and Elisa Diaz, 4, of Sandstone Drive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Santana was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:05 a.m. Monday at Slocumb and East Walnut streets, Goldsboro police said. Roderick Miles Davis Jr., 21, of Banks Avenue, was charged with a stoplight violation.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Stevens Mill and Blackjack Church roads, the Highway Patrol said. Eric James Karschner, 24, of Monroe Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
Vehicle break-ins
Six weekend vehicle break-ins are being investigated by Goldsboro police:
*Two cameras, a case, a backpack, clothing and makeup were stolen Sunday after a truck window was smashed in the 2600 block of North Park Drive. The property, owned by Gregory Hunter Clark and Lindsey D. Clark of Goldsboro, was valued at $1,160. Damage was set at $250.
*A wallet with personal papers, a purse and a cell phone was stolen Sunday after a vehicle window was broken in the 100 block of 10th Place. Mayron Pope put a $383 value on the stolen property. Damage was put at $75.
*A radio, a radar detector and 20 compact discs were stolen Saturday after a truck window was damaged in the 1000 block of Sunburst Drive. Dennis John Styles estimated the stolen property's value at $550.
*Fifteen $2 bills were stolen Saturday from a sport utility vehicle in the 1100 block of South George Street. The thief had smashed a window to get the cash. Gordon E. Herrell of Wilmington set damages at $75.
*$600 and personal papers were stolen Friday after a vehicle window was shattered in the 800 block of North Berkeley Boulevard. The other stolen property was valued at $30. Christopher M. Brimberry of Mount Olive estimated damage at $500.
*A camera, a radar detector, 40 compact discs, cologne and $8 were stolen Friday from a car in the 1800 block of Stephens Street. Christopher Meyer estimated the property's value at $918.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Jewelry, a movie camera and five $2 bills were stolen between Sunday and Monday from a home in the 100 block of Rosemary Court. A.L. Brown estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,100 and damage at $400.
*Jewelry and a video-game system were stolen sometime between Friday and Monday from a home in the 100 block of Shirley Drive. Bobby Christopher Glaspie put an $1,875 value on the property.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A television, a combination radio and compact disc player and $200 were stolen Monday after a door was pried open at an apartment in the 300 block of North James Street. Leonel Cordova, put a $200 value on the TV and player.
*A gray, four-door 2002 Mitsubishi Galant was stolen Sunday from 700 E. Ash St. Henry Campbell of Winnsboro, S.C., said he left his car running and the doors unlocked. The car was valued at $13,000.
*A red, four-door 1995 Suburu Impreza and $554 were stolen Saturday from the 400 block of A Street. Annemarie Rose Meinecke put a $3,000 value on the car.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with misdemeanor drug offenses at a home in the 300 block of Emmaus Church Road after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
*Henry Thomas Oats Jr., 37, was charged with possession of hydrocodon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
*Robert Earl Barnes, 50, of Washington was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and communicating threats. He was jailed in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
Sex charge
A 24-year-old Goldsboro man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with failure to change his address as a sex offender. Gregory Wayne McIntosh of Weston Circle was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said McIntosh had moved and had not notified the Sheriff's Office within 10 days.
