Two Charles B. Aycock High School students were in critical condition today at Pitt Memorial Hospital after they were involved in a wreck at the intersection of N.C. 581 and Nahunta Road on Monday evening.
Cynthia Leigh Hubbell and Amanda Sue Thigpen, both seniors, were taken by helicopter to Pitt following the accident, which happened at about 5:20 p.m.
The students were in a vehicle that struck a tractor-trailer hauling cars. The driver of the truck, Thedie Cortez Fulghum Jr., was not injured.
As of presstime today, Highway Patrol officers had not determined what charges, if any, would be filed.
Counselors from both Aycock and Norwayne Middle School were at Aycock today to talk with students and faculty about the accident.
According to investigators, the girls' vehicle was traveling west on Nahunta Road and the tractor-trailer was traveling north on N.C. 581.
Members of the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the emergency call.
