Trio arrested
after break-in
Three people were arrested before dawn Wednesday by an alert Wayne County sheriff's deputy and charged with breaking into a mobile home on a dealer's lot and stealing property.
Sheriff's Sgt. Sherwood Daly responded at about 2:30 a.m. to an alarm call at Grace Homes at 5423 U.S. 70 East after a door had been forced open to a display home.
Later, Daly saw a car traveling west on U.S. 70, about two miles from the mobile home dealership. He said the hatchback was open and property was sticking out of the trunk. Daly turned around and followed the car down Long's Plant Farm Road and Trotwood Drive, a dead-end road, where he stopped it.
The occupants were identified and detained. Daly discovered that the property in the car had been stolen from Grace Homes.
Jackie Franklin Sutton, 34, of North Berkeley Boulevard, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He also was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods in previous crime at the same business. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
The other two people -- Regina Dorette Herring, 40, of West Hill Street and Carmin Lee Melvin, 25, of Durham Lake Road, Dudley -- also were arrested and charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.
The stolen property -- two brass lamps, two end tables and a coffee table with a combined value of $700 -- was recovered. Damages to a door was estimated at about $275.
Store robbed
Two men, one armed with a shotgun, robbed a convenience store clerk before dawn today of an unknown amount of money, Goldsboro police reported.
The suspects entered The Pantry at 901 W. Grantham St. at about 2:55 a.m. with their faces covered with scarves. They demanded money, the report said, took the cash from the register and fled across U.S. 70.
Both were described as black and about 16 years old. The gunman described as 5-feet-3 and 135 pounds, and he wore a black jacket and black and white shoes.
Accidents
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $31,600 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $7,800 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:35 a.m. Monday on U.S. 70 near Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ashley Nichole Wiggins, 21, of PIney Grove Church Road, LaGrange, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Wiggins was charged with reckless driving. The report said that as she was passing a westbound tractor-trailer, her car ran off the left side, then she overcorrected the steering and the car collided with the left side of the big rig and spun off the left side into the median. The truck driver, Howard Lee Thomas, 58, of Church Road, LaGrange, was not hurt.
*A driver was injured in a two-car crash at 9:50 a.m. Monday at Genoa and Pecan roads, the Highway Patrol said. Nancy Yvonne Henderson, 48, of Pecan Road, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. Ms. Henderson's northbound auto collided with a westbound car driven by Alphonso Polite Jr. of Outlaw Road, Dudley, the report said. Damages were set at $4,000.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Arrington Bridge Road and N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Charles Andrew Fussell, 63, of Robert Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Troopers said Fussell had tried to make a right turn and his sport utility vehicle collided with a stopped northbound pickup truck. The other motorist was listed as Ernest Ceasar Kelly of Love Drive, Dudley.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $8,300 in a two-vehicle collision at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at U.S. 117 and O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Stephen Tyler Lane, 5, of Ironwood Road, was released after emergency-room treatment. His driver, Stephanie S. Lane, 32, of Ironwood Road, was charged with a stoplight violation. Troopers said Ms. Lane's southbound sport utility vehicle collided with a westbound pickup truck driven by Melvin Eugene Witherington of Bass Lake Drive, Mount Olive.
*A pickup truck was destroyed in a wreck at 6:18 p.m. Friday on Lancaster Road near Big Daddy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, James Allen Hardison, 16, of South Pine Street, Fremont, told troopers that he had lost consciousness. The pickup ran off the right side, struck the ditch and overturned. No charges were filed. The truck was valued at $5,500.
Pair charged
Two more people have been charged by Goldsboro police with taking part in last week's armed holdup of the Central Park fast-food restaurant at 212 E. Ash St.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday. He was not identified because of his age.
Police also charged Jabari Fields, 20, of Flamingo Circle, Dudley, with armed robbery. Fields has not been found. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call Investigator Chad Calloway at 580-4216 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.
A third person, Quentin L. Kenon, 17, of Neil Street, was arrested Tuesday and charged with armed robbery. He was jailed in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Break-in charge
A 19-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with four offenses after a residential break-in.
Curtrell Lamar Mitchell of Slocumb Street was charged with three felonies -- breaking and entering, larceny and obtaining property by false pretense -- and misdemeanor possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a secured bond.
Mitchell was accused of a Dec. 8 break-in in the 300 block of South Jefferson Avenue.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Three shotguns have been stolen from a gun case in a home in the 700 block of Gurley Dairy Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Johnathan Phillip Jones, said the Browning, Remington and Winchester shotguns were worth $1,700.
*A Cub Cadet riding lawn mower was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a carport in the 400 block of Bartlett Road, deputies said. The resident, David Earl Daw, put a $3,200 value on it.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A thief smashed a door glass between Tuesday and Wednesday at Matthews Motors at 204 N. Berkeley Blvd., grabbed a key and stole a 2002 Toyota Rav-4, police said. The thief also damaged a vending machine and stole $7. The stolen sport utility vehicle was valued at $16,000. Damages were set at $250.
*A thief pried open a door between Tuesday and Wednesday on a storage building at Pet Dairy at 1105 N. William St. and stole five truck tires, valued at $1,125, police said. A padlock also was cut from a refrigerated trailer, and $2 worth of chocolate milk was stolen. Damages were put at $415.
*A radio and compact disc player combination was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a car window was smashed in the 100 block of Vanderbilt Circle, police said. The owner and resident, Kevonta King, put a $200 value on his property and set damage at $125.
*A stereo and compact disc player combination was stolen between Sunday and Wednesday from a disabled car after a window was shattered in the 1600 block of North William Street, police said. The owner, Janson Matthew Frederick of Goldsboro, said the stereo was worth $300. Damage was put at $100.
Missing
Two girls were reported missing Wednesday by relatives to Wayne County authorities.
*Rasheda Lynette Bryant, 14, of 129 Wharton Lane was described as black, 5-feet-1 and 130 pounds with black hair in a ponytail, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When she was seen last at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, she was wearing dark blue shorts, a white T-shirt, gray shoes and a pink jacket.
*Eboni N. Bryant, 12, of 1100 N. Jefferson Ave., Apartment 56, was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 105 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a light complexion. When she was seen last at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, she was wearing blue jeans, a white jacket and sneakers.
