Protestant Pre-school kindergarten to return this fall

A Christian kindergarten program dormant for more than a decade is returning this fall.
Protestant Preschool began 56 years ago as a kindergarten program under the sponsorship of eight area churches. In the early 1990s, the emphasis shifted to classes for younger children.
Diane Dean, preschool director, said a number of requests prompted the move to resume the kindergarten program.
"We're now finding that there are some parents looking for a half-day program with a Christian emphasis," she said.
Starting in September, two classes with 10 students each will be offered at St. Luke United Methodist Church on East Pine Street. Class times will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Ms. Dean said in addition to the typical kindergarten curriculum, the program will incorporate computer, Spanish, art and music, as well as Bible teaching.
The preschool program is considered non-profit but there is a fee, she said, with financial aid and scholarships available.
When the program first began, she said, it was housed at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Currently at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the preschool program will continue in the fall with one 2-year-old class, three 3-year-old classes and four 4-year-old classes. The 3- and 4-year-old classes now being offered at St. Luke's will not continue in the fall to make way for the kindergarten program there.
Other participating churches include First Christian Disciples of Christ, First Presbyterian Church, Goldsboro Friends, St. Paul United Methodist and Lord's Table.
