Ex-patrolman
convicted of DWI
The former first sergeant of the Wayne County district of the state Highway Patrol was convicted Tuesday of driving while impaired after a lengthy trial in Wayne County District Court.
J.D. Booth, 59, of Trappers Run was sentenced to 60 days in jail. Judge Beth Heath of Kinston suspended the term on condition that Booth complete a year of unsupervised probation and pay a $100 fine and court costs.
Booth appealed the judgment to Wayne County Superior Court.
Booth was stopped Dec. 11 by Trooper J.S. Smith on Salem Church Road. He registered .17 percent blood-alcohol content. A reading of .08 percent is considered impaired under state law.
Booth retired from the Highway Patrol in 1997 and later ran for county sheriff.
Lumber thefts
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on the theft of building materials, including particleboard, two-by-fours, two-by-sixes and two-by-tens, in the last three weeks.
Thieves have taken the materials from construction sites on Nor Am Road and U.S. 13 South.
Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris at 731-1480 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
Pellet gun at school
A pellet gun was seized Tuesday from a 13-year-old student at Eastern Wayne Middle School, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The plastic b-b gun was seized by Principal Lee Roy Bryan. The student, who was not identified because of his age, was released to his parents. He will be charged in a juvenile petition, police said.
Woman cut
A 38-year-old Goldsboro woman was cut before dawn today, and the suspect fled, Goldsboro police reported.
Sandra D. Johnson suffered a cut finger. She told police that she was cut at about 12:07 a.m. in her apartment in the 400 block of West Oak Street after an argument with a man about rent money. The suspect also cut a phone line, the report said.
Robbery charge
A Goldsboro teen-ager has been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with the armed robbery of the Central Park restaurant at 212 E. Ash St.
Quentin L. Kenon, 17, of Neil Street, is accused of walking up to the drive-through window Thursday night, displaying a shotgun and demanding money, police said.
Kenon was arrested by Officer Thomas Collins at Olivia Lane and Lincoln Drive. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond on the felony charge. Police officials said today that more arrests in the case are possible.
Accidents
Six people were injured and damages were estimated at $28,000 in five recent traffic accidents in Wayne County, law officers reported.
*Two passengers were injured and damages were estimated at $5,550 in a three-car collision at 5:27 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 70 East near East Ash Street, Goldsboro police said. Teresa Walker, 49, of Forest Knolls Road and Tatum Walker, 6, of Dollard Town Road were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said. They were riding with Robert Harold Walker Jr., 49, of Forest Knolls Road. Another driver, Michael Shane Tillman, 29, of Pineview Cemetery Road, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The third driver was identified as Susan B. Moore of Yearling Drive.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday at East Ash Street and North Jefferson Avenue, police said. Tanisha Nicole Pittman, 23, of Courtyard Circle, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Joel Ignot Lopez, 44, of Antioch Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $2,500.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday at North Audubon and Park avenues, police said. An eastbound driver, Melissa Rae Radford, 28, of U.S. 70 West, was charged with a stop-sign violation. The report said her sport utility vehicle collided with a southbound auto driven by Rose B. Barnes of Nelson Drive.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-car accident at 12:27 p.m. Tuesday on North William Street near Oak Street, police said. Barbara Renee Williams, 47, of East Walnut, was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said. The other driver, Tommy Barnes Trail, 44, of Perkins Road, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $2,000.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $13,000 in a two-truck accident at 2:03 p.m. Sunday at Old Smithfield and Ferry Bridge roads, the Highway Patrol said. Joan M. Herrington, 57, of Old Smithfield Road and Mark Austin Fairchild, 18, of Ava Street were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Herrington was charged with a yield violation. The impact sent Fairchild's truck into a ditch and it rolled over four times, troopers said.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A thief damaged a door glass before dawn today at Five Star Deli at 212 N. Berkeley Blvd., pulled a cash register from the counter and stole $17, Goldsboro police said. Damage was set at $100.
*A red Craftsman riding lawn mower was stolen between Saturday and Tuesday from the 300 block of Hare Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Robert L. Hall, said the mower was worth $2,600.
*A red utility trailer was stolen between April 20 and Tuesday from Dee's Farm Village, deputies said. The owner, Edwin Lee Hardister of Mourning Dove Lane, put a $750 value on the trailer and offered a $200 reward for its return.
Fraud charge
A woman who had worked as a bank teller was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and charged with embezzlement. Tennille M. Spruill, 27, of East Old Fort Road, Pikeville, was accused of taking money from BB&T in Goldsboro, Investigator Mike Moore said. She was released from custody on a $3,000 unsecured bond.
Missing
A 16-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Tuesday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Doreshia Shavone Barnes of 1001 Evergreen Ave. was described as black, 4-feet-6 and 116 pounds, with black hair, black eyes and a light complexion. She has not been seen since 9 p.m. Sunday. Anyone with information on her location is asked to call police at 705-6572.
