The state Parole Commission is deciding whether to parole Larry Buckram, who was convicted in the 1990 murder of Melvin Best near Mount Olive.

Best, 63, was struck in the head with a board on June 7, 1990. Buckram, who was then 36, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison the following November.

The commission will consider information from people who are either for or against Buckram's parole, as well as other factors in his case. The commission will make a decision and notify the public within 10 days of the decision.

People who have a question or want to express an opinion on the issue should call Melita Groomes, the executive director of the N.C. Post Release Supervision and Parole Commission, at 919-716-3017. Ms. Groomes said such investigations normally take from one to three months.
