A Wayne Memorial Hospital police officer was killed Monday night when he was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle near the end of River Road, officials said.

The victim was identified by the state Highway Patrol as Jason Reid Lee, 26, of 2126 Emmaus Church Road, Dudley. Lee was a former Wayne County sheriff's deputy.

State Trooper Robert Thaxton said Lee was driving east at about 10:10 p.m. and that the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and struck a utility pole. Lee was thrown into the pole, the trooper reported.

The new four-wheeler, owned by Randy Kyle Lane of Mince Hill Road in Seven Springs, sustained about $1,000 in damages.

The traffic death was the seventh on Wayne County roads this year, including one in Goldsboro.
