A woman awakened by the sounds of a fire in her bedroom was unhurt this morning after the fire heavily damaged her home on Shaw Court near Hooks River Road.
Marquita Waters of 208 Shaw Court said she didn't hear the smoke alarm go off. But the device was melting off the wall when Goldsboro firefighters arrived soon after 8 a.m.
Fifteen Goldsboro firefighters and two EMS personnel responded to the emergency call.
The fire probably started in the bedroom, said Lt. Frank Sasser of the Goldsboro Fire Department. Sasser said that investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
Ms. Waters was the only person in the house at the time of the fire. Her aunt, Patricia Douglas, who owns the house and lives there with her niece, was not home.
The house was valued at $65,000 and its contents at $35,000.
Damage was estimated by fire department officials at $35,000 to the house and $15,000 to its contents.
City firemen from stations 1, 2 and 3 responded.
