Bogus checks
DUDLEY -- About 25 to 30 people got rich Thursday night.
They cashed 92 payroll checks for a total $35,948.06 at Case Farms on Pecan Road near Dudley, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.
Wilton Owens of Macclesfield cashed the checks for Carolina Check Co. of Tarboro. But he discovered that not only were all 92 checks counterfeit, but that so were the Case Farms identifications that the people used to cash them, the report said.
Owens told deputies that a number of men and women cashed the counterfeit payroll checks. None of the names matched a list of Case Farms employees, Deputy Michael Biggins said.
Several people cashed two or three checks, bearing the same number, name and dollar amount, the report said. The bogus checks were seized.
Two IDs with the same picture under different names also were found in trash.
An investigation is continuing.
Nine charges
A 31-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with nine felony offenses in connection with residential break-ins off U.S. 70 West. James Thomas Spence of Boxwood Lane was charged with three counts each of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. Some property has been recovered, Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris said. Spence was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
Money stolen
Employees of two companies left their sport utility vehicles unlocked during stops at stores Thursday and then returned to find the cash was gone, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Robert Sasser of Robert's Communications of Goldsboro reported the theft of $1,100, a calculator, a satchel, a cell phone, a pager, a flashlight and a checkbook.
Monty Allen of Pepsi Cola of Goldsboro reported the larceny of $528.15 and two checks for $988.
Drug charges
Two Goldsboro people was arrested Thursday by the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office during a traffic stop on U.S. 70 East and charged with felony drug offenses.
Wilfriniadeshawn Paulette Lucas of Randall Lane was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $7,000 secured bond.
Devin Wooten of New Hope Road was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and no operator's license. He was jailed in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Accidents
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $15,500 in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured and her car was demolished in a wreck at 4:09 a.m. today on North Spence Avenue near Cashwell Drive, police said. Veronica Nicole Brown, 25, of Cuyler Best Road was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. Ms. Brown was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and failure to reduce speed. The report said her northbound car ran off the right side, struck a tree and overturned. The auto was valued at $12,000.
*A driver was injured in a two-car collision at 4:12 p.m. Thursday on East Ash Street near North Audubon Avenue, police said. Thad Artis III, 25, of Antioch Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Jennifer Lynn Jones, 21, of Old Grantham Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were set at $3,500.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A Remington shotgun and 21-inch television were stolen Thursday from a home in the 1200 block of Pinkney Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door and an electrical outlet panel. The resident, Robert E. Davis, estimated the value of the stolen property at $750 and damage at $400.
*A compact disc player, four speakers and an amplifier were stolen Thursday after a car window was smashed in the 200 block of Hereford Drive, deputies said. The property, owned by the resident, Travis Deshaun Quinn, was valued at $739. Damage was set at $150.
*A microwave oven, 10 outside light fixtures, six indoor fixtures and light bulbs were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday after a door was damaged in a home in the 800 block of Nor Am Road, deputies said. The stolen property, owned by Lancaster Builders of Stantonsburg, was valued at $480 and damage was set at $200.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A generator, a chain saw, a weed trimmer, an emergency light, an edger, a leaf blower and a lawn mower were stolen between April 3 and Thursday from a storage building in the 1600 block of East Mulberry Street, police said. The thief had cut a lock to get inside. The resident, Steven Charles Ross, put a $2,216 value on the stolen property.
*Battery-powered tools, a compact disc player, a sander, a nailer and a gas mask were stolen Thursday after a truck window was smashed in the 2300 block of Norwood Avenue, police said. The owner, Joseph Stephen Wellman of Goldsboro, estimated the stolen property's value at $870 and damage at $100.
*A compact disc player was stolen between Thursday night and dawn today after a car window was shattered in the 1800 block of East Ash Street, police said. The owner, Jennifer N. Knotts of Dudley, did not estimate the CD's value or the damage.
