More than 72 tons of solid waste were collected during a free disposal day in Duplin County on Saturday.

Teresa Lanier of Keep America Beautiful said the residents who took advantage of the opportunity afforded by the county Board of Commissioners saved more than $1,500 in tipping fees.

Among the items brought to disposal sites around the county were nearly nine tons of used tires and 13 tons of scrap metal.

The next big cleanup push in Duplin will be in the fall, Lanier said, when the county takes part in the statewide Big Sweep campaign.
