Eureka town commissioners decided Monday to schedule smoke testing of the town's sewer lines. The testing will take place April 13, weather permitting, said Town Clerk Reta Chase.

The testing will be performed by Tony Honeycutt of the North Carolina Rural Water Association. Ms. Chase said the process is expected to identify problems in Eureka's sewer system. If problems are found, the next step would be videotaping, Ms. Chase said.

The Eureka commissioners plan to schedule a meeting with Fremont leaders to discuss sewer rates.

Also on Monday, the commissioners discussed requests to use the ballfield at the old Eureka Elementary School for a church softball league this summer. The commissioners decided to inquire about upgrades to the field, including a walking area and playground equipment. Repairs to the bleachers are needed as well, Ms. Chase said.

In the coming weeks, commissioners plan to walk Eureka's streets to look for needed repairs to streets and signs, she said.
