An accident at the intersection of Ridge Drive and Old Grantham Road sent three people to the hospital Monday morning, including two local students.

Vehicles driven by Clyde Russell Snead, 16, of Scott Hill Drive, and Phat Hong Tran of Twin Creek Drive, collided at the intersection at about 7:30 a.m., North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper M.G. Conley said.

Details of the circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately available. Charges are pending in the case, Conley said.

Snead, and a minor female passenger, allegedly were headed to school when the accident occurred.

Wayne County students returned to school this morning after a week of spring break.

Units from Mar-Mac Volunteer Fire Department and Wayne County EMS Station No. 3 responded to the call, with the fire department using the Jaws of Life to free the female passenger.

All three people were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Both vehicles were destroyed, with total damages estimated at $11,400.

“That was the worst wreck I’ve seen in two or three years,” Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Harrell said.
