Duplin board to get update on mold, asbestos problems

KENANSVILLE -- County Planner Mike Aldridge will update commissioners Monday on the project to get rid of mold and asbestos at the courthouse.
Officials had thought they had gotten rid of all of the asbestos until a couple of weeks ago when they found out a few pieces of duct work still need to be removed. Aldridge said some materials that had been placed around the duct work tested positive for asbestos. Asbestos abatement will continue this week, he said.
The main courtroom will look about like it did before the renovations, he said, but it will have updated technology like power jacks in the floor and a means for lawyers and prosecutors to hook up their computers at their desks. Some phone and computer wiring needs to be upgraded, he said.
The project is on schedule and within its $1.3 million budget. Aldridge said he expects the contractor to finish the job by the first of October. He said he is pleased with the contractor, D.S. Simmons of Goldsboro. "They're doing a good job for us," he said.
