The Patetown Volunteer Fire Department's insurance rating has improved by a point, from a 7 to a 6. Officials say the improvement could save homeowners money in annual insurance costs.

Chief John Gardner said the new rating was based on improved training, upgraded equipment and water supply, and better mutual aid among neighboring departments.

"Any time we can help the homeowners, it's worth it," he said.

The new rating will go into effect Friday. Fire Capt. Shawn Harris urged homeowners to remind their insurance agents about the change.

The Patetown department was inspected in late September for the first time since 1984.

The department's fire district covers 14 square miles and has about 2,200 residents, several businesses and five churches.
